It was the idea of flower designer Ryutaro Inoue, who moved from Tokyo to Kawakawa to find the slower, deep-rooted rhythms that were nearly a decade ago. From edible flowers and herbs to the overall harmony of the fields, the designer’s eyes remain at the heart of his process.
For Inoue, farming is not just about producing food—it is also a means of cultivating local culture. “I think it’s more interesting when the farm is not just a place of production,” he explained. “It becomes a place for communication and learning.”
His vision is also absolutely sustainable: “If the soil is healthier ten years from now, that’s enough for me,” he said.
Minamiboso: A vibrant hub for cycling and community

Initially, it was just a party spot for cycling clubs. Today, it also has a hotel, solo space, co-working area and clubhouse. A new children’s park associated with the facility is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in late spring 2026.

As a cyclist himself, Setogawa sees the potential of the natural features of the region: proximity to Tokyo, diverse terrain and light traffic. “It has hills and flatness [stretches]. The mountains and the sea are very close. It’s very unique in Kanto. “Over time he helped set up a local tourism association, created maps and guided routes, and distributed hundreds of handmade bicycle racks to local businesses.
But the Hegri Hub is more than just cycling. “We want to be a hub where locals and non-locals – cyclists, non-cyclists, families, children, people with dogs – all blended together throughout the region,” Setogawa said.

His long-term vision is clear: “This place is indeed unknown,” he said. “But there are only 90 minutes to Tokyo. It should be relaxed, retreated, well-being – where people can recover.”

At the time, no other ceramic home in the area used clay from the surrounding rice fields, which was considered too intensive and difficult to cooperate. “No one did that, so I grabbed it little by little,” Nishiyama recalls.
“It didn’t go well at first,” he admitted. Still, he was determined to make it work in some way. “I could have bought clay and made pottery alone. But the project is different. It feels like a common challenge, like we created something together. It opens new levels for my work, completely different from anything I’ve done before.”
The red tone of his finished product (usually uncluttered or given only minimal treatment) echoes the color of the soil itself. “That red hue – that’s the color of AWA,” he said. “I want to make it feel like they belong to something here.”
Today, his work appears in restaurants and Ryokan, not only in Japan but abroad. But his focus remains on the house he was adopted. “I’m not going to make luxury goods,” he said. “I want people here to use it every day.”
