So, what is rimming?

Rimming, aka analingus, is the act of orally stimulating the anus, both externally and internally. This can include licking, sucking and kissing!

How do I know if my partner likes it?

Talk to them. It’s that simple!

Nah, I get that talking to your partner about sex can potentially be a bit awkward, especially if you’re suggesting trying something new. Whether you’re giving or receiving analingus, it’s important to have a chat with your partner before you just dive in head first… if you’ll pardon the pun.

If this is your first time approaching this subject, I’d suggest taking a look at our Yes, No, Maybe List. This acts as a great conversation starter, discussing all kinds of sexual acts.

How do I give a rimjob?

Technique is very dependent on what your partner likes, so we’re going to go through the basics and then give you a few tips and tricks below.

  • Use both your lips and tongue to stimulate the outside of the anus and sensitive surrounding area.
  • For first-time rimmers, don’t go straight for the “bullseye.” It’s very sensitive! Slowly and gently work your way towards it, checking in with the receiving partner.
  • Alternate between licking, sucking and kissing. Keeping your tongue flat like you’re licking an ice cream is a great place to start.
  • For first-time rim-ees, make sure you’re in a position where you’ll feel comfortable. It needs to provide access to your lover but needs to be stable and relaxed enough that you can hold it if necessary. Doggy is a classic because it lets the rimmer to get nice and close and allows them to hold your cheeks open.
  • Make sure you’re both super relaxed. Your sphincter will tighten up if you’re stressed out – Sex is supposed to be fun, remember!

Important Note: If you’re performing analingus on someone with a vulva, do not alternate between the vagina and the anus! This can lead to bacterial transfer and STIs.

Level up your rimming technique!

Variety is the spice of life! Vary your technique by changing position, speed, and intensity, and even by introducing some light penetration if you’re both into it. *See below for prep if this is something you’re into.*

If you’re a newbie to butt stuff or you just don’t like the taste, flavoured lubricant can be a great aid to anal-oral. As long as they are safe to consume, you could also use tingling or warming lubes, too!

Preparing for Analingus

One of the biggest questions around rimming is, ‘How do you prepare?’. There are various steps you can take to get ready to be on the receiving end of a rimjob.

Recommended Steps for Cleaning:

  • Showering – This feels like a fairly obvious step in getting ready for anal play, but I still have to put it on the list. Wash around your w(hole) bum with gentle, unscented soap so you’re clean and fresh for your lover.
  • Douching – Douching is advisable for any internal play to avoid dirt and germs. A douche flushes out the lowest part of the colon, using water to get rid of any particles that might be hanging around. There are manual, automatic and shower attachment versions of douches available. *You might be fine without douching if you’re only playing externally, but for added confidence or if you want to get squeaky clean, it’s worth doing.*
  • Shaving or Waxing – Bum hair is inevitable regardless of your partner’s gender. If you want to indulge in hair removal, we’d suggest going to a professional waxer or getting someone else to shave your behind. Also, leave between 24 to 48 hours to avoid irritation.

Does rimming hurt?

It shouldn’t, and that’s important to remember. We’ve said it over and over on this blog, but communication is key.

If you’re receiving anal stimulation for the first time, there can be some initially uncomfortable feelings. But that’s mostly because your booty hole is jam-packed with nerve endings, and it’s not used to that kind of sensation. However, if anything feels wrong or uncomfortable, it’s best to back off for a little while before resuming.

This being said analingus shouldn’t hurt! Take it slow, working up to more and more stimulation to discover what both partners like. Talk to each other throughout, especially if it’s your first time, and ensure you continue to communicate afterwards, too.

Is it safe?

Just like pretty much any and all sex, to be safe, you need some form of barrier. This is the same with analingus. There is a possibility of contracting or passing STIs via unprotected anal sex, which is why using appropriate protection is always suggested. We’d recommend using dental dams for safe ass eating. Check out Brook’s guide to using dental dams for a full rundown of these handy contraceptives.

These can either be purchased or, if you’re up for a little pre-sex arts and crafts, you can make one from a condom.

Making a Dental Dam

  1. Remove the condom from its packaging.
  2. Cut off the tip and the rolled end with a pair of scissors.
  3. Once you have a tube, cut lengthways along one side to create a flat square.
  4. You have a dental dam! This can be used for vaginal or anal sex and then disposed of.

We’d recommend using a flavoured condom for this, but as long as the lube is safe to consume, you can use any condom you’d like.

Tossed salad, anyone? Now you know the basics of rimming, it’s time to go forth and explore… the butt hole!
