Young and young adults are taking astrology seriously…perhaps at the expense of their serious relationships.
A recent survey by writing site EduBirdie found that 74% of Gen Z and Millennials would check a potential partner’s horoscope to avoid a mismatch, and a third would not date someone who is incompatible.
Additionally, astrological loyalties can damage existing relationships, as 21% of young people admitted they had been dumped because of their zodiac sign.
This interest in star data is not limited to individuals, but also extends to the professional world.
A recent study found that a whopping 41% of Gen Z and Millennials research the zodiac signs of potential bosses and co-workers before accepting a job offer.
Remember, we are all a mixture of vice and virtue, poison and tenderness, strengths and weaknesses. When it comes to the zodiac, each sign has a set of positive and negative qualities that tell how they operate in all relationships.
While a birth chart is an illuminating way to learn about another person, Stereotypes that reduce someone to their star sign can be a surefire way to kill a person closely relatedexist.

Look for patterns, not predictions
Pochotna explains that focusing too much on whether your zodiac sign “matches” your partner can distract you from how you interact with each other.
“If astrology says you are more independent, ask yourself if this is true in your relationship. Use it to discover habits, not to predict the future,” Pochotna advises. “It’s your actions and communications that matter, not what an app or astrologer says about your sign. Astrology can provide insight, but it’s not a substitute for solving real problems as they arise.”
Using astrology to facilitate meaningful conversations
Astrology helps us use archetypes (tenants of Jungian psychology) to understand ourselves and others. However, it is crucial to view astrology as a portal rather than an absolute authority.
As Pochotna suggests, “Use astrology to delve into something deeper—like your values, long-term goals, or how you handle conflict. If your partner’s chart shows they are very emotionally involved of intimacy, use this as an opportunity to talk about what emotional support looks like for both of you.
“Astrology is a tool for starting conversations, but the real magic happens in those deeper conversations.”
Don’t hate a hater
According to the same survey by EduBirdie, 13% of young people have been dumped by their partners because of their interest in astrology. Pochotna points out that being criticized for your passions, whatever they are, is a sign of a larger problem.
“It’s about neglecting the things that are important to you. You want a partner who is curious and supportive, even if they don’t share all of your interests. Mutual respect is crucial in any relationship, and it’s hard to belittle your own Interest is a major red flag.”

Keep it light and not literal
Relationships are about action and responsibility; blaming you for your actions or making excuses for your problems based on planetary transits like retrograde and eclipse cycles can be a dangerous crutch.
“While astrology can explain some things, don’t use it as an excuse to avoid real conversations. If something’s wrong, talk about it,” explains Pochotna. “Sure, maybe the planet is a little messed up right now, but your relationship requires effort and honest communication, not just a celebrity-driven blame game. Acknowledge your relationship issues and take responsibility for them.”
