Most tourists stick to the bustling temples and gardens in Kyoto to admire the autumn leaves of Japan – they missed seriously. From the sturdy cliffs covered in fire colors in Gunma to the traditional gardens carefully designed in Ouckama, the beauty of Japanese autumn colors cannot be included in a simple list.

For a peaceful, charming autumn scene without a large crowd, we highly recommend you venture outside of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Without further ado, this is just the most beautiful autumn leaves in Japan.

Jozankei Onsen (Hokkaido Prefecture)

Less than an hour from downtown Saporo, you will find the amazing Jozankei Onsen, a beloved hot spring town. Known as the “Sapporo’s Hot Spring Forest” and is surrounded by mountains, the area allows you to enjoy the vibrant autumn leaves by strolling through the town. The views of the Futami Suspension Bridge are a must-see, with magnificent glimpses of the valley below. Starting from early October, the “Five Big Autumn Leaves” tour begins, with the shuttle taking visitors to five different viewing attractions.

Mitsuishi Mountain (Iwate Prefecture)

Mitsuishi Mountain is usually one of the earliest attractions to capture autumn leaves, and its leaves are often seen turning from mid-September. Mitsubishi means “three stones”, which refers to its three majestic peaks. On the top of the mountain you can stare at the spectacular carpet of maple trees spreading down the ridgeline towards Iwate Mountain.

Tsutanuma Pond (Aomori Prefecture)

Tsutanuma is the most popular of the “Seven Swamps” of Tsuta Onsen, a group of serene ponds scattered with beech forests in the area. Tani Chuanshan (Gunma County)

Forodad Falls (Ibaraki County)

Starting from late November, hundreds of maple and ginkgo trees illuminate the garden with colorful shadows.

Senjojiki Cirque (Nano Prefecture)

Senjojiki Cirque in the central Alps is famous for its spectacular golden landscape, with colors burning in color from late September to early October. Chuanqiu Lake (Yamashi Prefecture)

Kolankai (Aichi County)

With approximately 4,000 different species of maple trees, Korankei is one of the most famous and legendary autumn leaf destinations in the Tokai region. The tradition of growing maple trees here dates back to around 1634 and is further expanded by local volunteers from consultants from late Taisha to early stages.
