As we transition from Mental Health Awareness Month to Pride Month, let’s take a look at the mental health benefits of celebrating Pride.
Throughout the month of June, Pride is celebrated around the world. In the United States, June is particularly significant as it commemorates the The Stonewall Riotsa series of spontaneous demonstrations organized in response to the police raid from a New York gay bar in June 1969. The riots are widely regarded as the defining moment that transformed the struggle for freedom in the 21st century. LGBT rightsMany pride events take place in June.
Challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people
The challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community are not just a matter of the past, as the struggles continue. In many countries, for example, homosexuality is considered a crime punishable by imprisonment and police brutality. Even in countries where being LGBTQIA+ is technically legal, LGBTQIA+ people face discrimination, prejudice, harassment, and violence. As a result, it is common for LGBTQIA+ people to find themselves in abusive, hostile, stressful, or otherwise compromised situations. To top it all off, most countries do not have legal protections in place to protect the LGBTQIA+ community.
Not so long ago, being gay was classified as a “mental disorder.” It was only through relentless pressure from die-hard activists that this changed.
Ironically, if anything triggered the “mental disorder,” it was the persistent and widespread stigma associated with being a sexual minority. Loneliness, low self-esteem, and negative self-image are commonplace, making LGBTQIA+ communities extremely vulnerable to mental health issues like depression, anxiety, stress, substance abuse, suicidal ideation, and self-harm.
Why celebrate Pride?
The short answer, of course, is: why not?
Pride events aim to recognize and celebrate the contributions of LGBTQIA+ people around the world.
Pride events are not just about celebrating and thanking people, however. Since Stonewall, demands for recognition and equal rights have only grown, making Pride a time for advocacy and activism.
But there’s yet another reason to celebrate Pride: for your mental health!
Let’s celebrate Pride for its mental health benefits
Attending a Pride celebration (or any other type of event) can have a positive impact on self-confidence, resilience, and overall mental well-being. Not to mention, it can be great for your social life.
Let’s break down some of the mental health benefits of being loud and proud, shall we?
– Visibility. Pride events provide a real opportunity for self-empowerment. Young people in particular can struggle with isolation. Pride boldly takes up space in the public space, allowing people to represent themselves and feel included in something much bigger than themselves. And for straight/cis people, Pride is an opportunity to learn and challenge any misinformation or biases they may hold. Ultimately, Pride is a celebration of our differences, which can help promote empathy and acceptance.
– Community. Many members of the LGBTQIA+ community have experienced rejection at one time or another. Attending Pride can make it easier to seek support and attention from like-minded people. Access to social support can help people cope better. Not surprisingly, having a strong and trusted community has been shown to reduce the risk of depression or anxiety.
– Love of self. Although Pride Month was created to celebrate Gay Pride, the 2022 incarnation of the LGBTQIA+ acronym stands for the following: lesbian; gay; bisexual; transgender; queer/questioning; intersex; asexual/aromantic/agender; as well as other non-heterosexual or non-binary identities, such as pansexual, omnisexual, or gender fluid. At its core, the movement provides a safe space for allNormalizing different identities can help many people show more love to themselves, helping them feel more comfortable and confident in their identities.
– Strength. Pride encourages strong and assertive self-expression. Despite the stigma and discrimination LGBTQIA+ people often face, Pride month is a colorful public celebration where unity is strength, making it easier to resist unfair obstacles.
– Self-expression. Pride is inherently creative. People find countless unique and subversive ways to express themselves: clothing, accessories, costumes, signs, slogans, paintings, sculptures, and music, to name a few. Artists are given free rein to find colorful new ways to celebrate community and make delightfully bold statements.
– AimPride is infused with social, cultural, and political goals. Events serve to raise awareness about everything from citizenship and immigration to suicide prevention, body positivity, and, of course, mental health. Everyone who gets involved in the movement brings their personal power to a larger collective meaning and purpose, which in turn improves the mental health and life satisfaction of the community as a whole.
Moral of the story: Celebrating Pride is not only important from a societal perspective, it also has significant positive impacts on mental health. The values that Pride espouses (i.e. self-love, body positivity, and equal rights) can benefit everyone, even those who don’t identify with the community.
This Pride Month, let’s all find ways to support the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole while being proud of our own identities!
Happy Pride 2022 to all! <3
