Spirituality: The unexpected gift of recovery

Becoming Vulnerable - Sex and Relationship Healing

First, we have to stop playing God. It doesn’t work.

As one long-term recovering sex addict recalled: “When I started sexual recovery, all I wanted was to minimize the consequences of my behavior. I wanted all my problems to go away so I could go back to a normal life (including my addiction). I wasn’t looking to change my behavior, and I certainly wasn’t interested in the ‘spiritual awakening’ that 12th Step promised. Well, things didn’t go as planned. I was crushed by the consequences. At the same time, as I stayed in recovery, I gradually had a spiritual awakening. Today, I’m grateful for the consequences I experienced because they kept me in the program, and without it, I wouldn’t have what I value most in my life now: a spiritual connection.”

Today’s Task
Think of your recovery as a spiritual journey, not a means to an end.
