Everyone at Bondara is excited about Sexual Health Week starting on 9th September 2024. Our friends at Brook have been gearing up to host a conversation about Sexual Health Week 2024 (#SHW24). So, let’s have a quick chat about the birds and the bees…

We often say that sex education is for young people, but many adults miss out on sex education, both in school and at home.

STIs infect more than 1 million people every day. In 2023, 401,800 cases of STIs were diagnosed in the UK, up 4.7% from 383,789 in 2022 [1]. It was like the entire Bahamas was applauded.

If left untreated, sexually transmitted infections can have a number of adverse effects. Infections can negatively affect fertility and sexual function in both men and women. [2]Interestingly, the most common STIs are easily treated with antibiotics if caught early. I’m referring to bacterial syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and trichomoniasis. Other viral infections include hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV), HIV, and human papillomavirus (HPV). Unfortunately, most cases go undetected because most people present asymptomatically—meaning they have no symptoms. Therefore, getting screened is essential for your health. [3].

There are over 30 bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause STDs, so even if you think you are safe, they can still be spread through vaginal, anal and oral sex. Also, you can’t tell if someone has an STD by their appearance. [4]The only way you can know is through STI test results.

Have you been tested for STIs in the past few months? Great! Hopefully you got a little surprise. For all you other kinky babes out there, I suggest you take a look at Bondara’s condom range and book an appointment at your local sexual health clinic. Ladies, you can also suggest that your partner use a latex condom to safely lick you… check out Laura’s article on how to make one.

The intersectionality of sexual health means that STIs continue to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual, Afro-Caribbean and young people aged 15 to 24 years. [5]Most importantly, Bondara wants everyone to be able to enjoy sex and relationships safely.

Sexual Health Week is a week to celebrate sexual health and wellbeing.

Bondara’s whole “MO” is to orgasm is fun and we hope you feel that from us. Pleasure is king! As cheeky as we try to be, it’s also important to mention safety and signposting information to everyone. Especially when we know you guys are enjoying fetishes, multi-partner play and BDSM practices. Conversations about sexual health can help remove the stigma of infection and improve public health. Just like mental health is health, sexual health is health…blah!

Brooke talks sexual health

Next week, Brooke will host Free The webinar panel discusses sexual health and explores the links between mental health and sexual health. Helen Corteen, designated Head of Health and Mental Health at Brook, will moderate the conversation. Natasha Devon MBE, Tamsin Watson of YoungMinds, Emma Rigby of the Young People’s Health Association and Anna Bailey, also at Brook, will join Helen for a much-needed discussion.

SHW is truly an opportunity to bring the industry together and celebrate everyone who advocates for improved sexual health, while also amplifying the voices of those facing health inequities.

Our recommended sex toys

Sex is a transient space in which our minds exist. The need for precisely controlled sex, the desire to be punished (safely), and ultimately the feeling of pleasure through various stimulations is cathartic when done in a safe space.

“Sex, desire, and love are interrelated but also independent,” Bauman said in his early talk on sexual health, On the Postmodern Uses of Sex. Essentially, he was saying that sex, pleasure, and mental health, while separate topics in their own right, are intertwined.

You’ll often find that conversations about sex often lead to discussions about pleasure or mental health (get it). Bondara believes in pleasure. We believe in having fun and orgasms. Yay! We also know that we occasionally need to discuss sexual health in depth for those who may need help.

Why is it important to start talking about sexual health? We can’t help but notice an increase in STI cases! Oops! Either you guys are having sex more often and forgetting to bandage before kissing, or more people are getting tested and treated – which is a good thing!

Your Sexual Health Conversation

Vincent of Exeter: “The rates of sexually transmitted diseases are rising because people don’t want serious relationships anymore. We’re at the stage of ‘do whatever you want’, ‘do what you want’ and ‘enjoy life’, but come on. They [STIs) here, there, and everywhere. Get tested; NO EXCUSE.”

Lydia, Armagh: “I’ve had Chlamydia lol. It was pretty fine. I didn’t have it very bad, but the first thing I noticed was a weird discharge. I got tested, and so did [NAME REDACTED]. We took the medicine and it was done :)”.

Sophie Chester: “The treatment was much easier than I thought it would be. I was so nervous to tell anyone because it was so gross, especially because I had a partner. But when I finished my course of treatment I told my friends because it wasn’t a big deal and it was easy to treat. I wanted everyone to know this because STIs are scary for everyone.”

Stephen Eli: “Maybe because everyone is panicking about it, that’s why the rates are going up? There’s almost a stigma around going to the doctor, so I understand people putting it off. But it’s important because spreading this disease is a bit of a vile thing, and maybe when people know it’s no big deal, they’ll have more confidence to get tested and treated for it.”

Do you feel this way?

In addition to your sexual health, you must also take care of your physical health. This includes practicing stretching, flogging, bondage, Shabari, caning, etc. Also, stay safe when pursuing the big “O”. Also, research, ask us, and talk to your partner. The last thing we want you to do is go to the ER with a cucumber inserted too deeply in your butt (for the love of Bondara, always use a flared base when having anal sex and use toys designed for pleasure, thank you).
