Overcoming Spousal Awkwardness: The Journey Toward Mature Love

A husband was embarrassed by his wife's behavior in a restaurant.

Lori and I recently saw a woman in distress at Costco. Her husband did nothing to help her. I suspect he was embarrassed by her plight and tried to distance himself from her.

I remember being embarrassed by my girlfriend in high school. I made some unkind choices because of it. But that wasn’t the case with Lori, and I haven’t felt that way in a long time.

None of this, including why it got better, has anything to do with my girlfriend or Lori. I got better with Lori because I went through a lot of growth between the ages of 18 and 23. It’s no longer an issue because I’m mature enough to no longer do stupid things because of what my girlfriend says or does.

Looking back, a lot of the times my girlfriend embarrassed me were unacceptable. It rarely, if ever, happened with Lori. But the unloving behaviors I engaged in because of embarrassment were 100% my fault. It was all because of my pride and fear. I cared more about what others thought of me than I did about my wife’s struggles and needs. It was petty and selfish.

If any of the above points strike a chord with you, please pray thoughtfully.
