Is Book Club a New Dating App? A new survey shows that nearly a quarter of book club members encountered a meeting in their reading group.

A poll of 2,000 Americans who participated in the book club found that a surprising number (23%) met their romance people in their club.

Interestingly, men were more likely to encounter romantic interest in the reading group than women (38% vs. 16%).

The study was conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Thriftbook and found that 44% of respondents would rather meet at their book club than meet a romantic partner on a dating app.

Among all generations, Gen X (45%) and Gen Z (47%) are most likely to choose a book club over a dating app.

However, more than half of book club members (56%) admit that they like to keep book club members in secrets throughout their lives, and men are more likely to feel that way than women (69% vs 48%).

The study looked at their reading volume, and book club members read an average of 10 books last year.

28% of respondents said they found it difficult to meet with other people with similar literary tastes before joining a book club.

According to the study, respondents joined the reading group mainly because they read new books (68%), socialize (63%) and make new friends (59%), while Gen Z and millennials (both 61%) are more likely to join book clubs in order to build friendships with older friendships.

Seeing where they meet, 42% of book clubs meet, 11% of online gatherings and 43% of people meet through face-to-face and online gatherings.

Almost all respondents (93%) agreed to meet with reading groups already treated, while 98% said this improved their mental health.

“The reading group not only has a significant impact on readers’ romantic life and friendship, but it is also very beneficial to the mental health of book club members,” said Barbara Hagen, vice president of marketing at Thriftbooks. “It is incredible that readers are joining the reading group for the literary side and social and healthy interests.”

According to the survey results, Gen Z’s favorite book club is the Romantic Club (44%), while Millennials (42%), Gen X (45%) and Baby Boomers (54%) all love the Mystery Books the Most.

When asked about their current reading with their group, popular book respondents quoted “The Fourth Wing,” “With the Wind,” “The Harry Potter” series, “The Thief,” “Midnight Library,” and “Outsider.”

Listed their favorite group readings in history, the popular champions listed are “Little Women”, “Pride and Prejudice”, “Help” and “Kill a Mockingbird”.

Most readers (63%) say that social media has influenced their reading more over the past year, while 57% have followed book influencers on social platforms.

Watching their most active places on social media, Gen Z respondents spent the most time in Tiktok’s book community, while Millennials (62%), Gen X (64%) and Baby Boomers (54%) (54%) are the most active on Facebook.

“In the survey, we found readers meeting face to face, online, online and online environments and even social forums. They also read a variety of literature from recently released champions to classics and building friends and romantic connections along the way,” Hagen said. “If you’re interested or interested in joining a book club, we encourage you to do so. Everyone has a bunch of people.”

Investigation method:

The Talker Research surveyed 2,000 Americans at the Book Club; the survey was commissioned by the Tiff Book and managed and conducted online by Talker Research between April 17 and April 24, 2025.
