The LGBT Foundation is a national charity based out of Manchester with LGBTQ+ health and wellbeing at their heart. From their UK helpline, to counselling, sexual health, and wellbeing services, they’re working every day to help LGBTQ+ people live free from discrimination.
Here are some of their standout moments from this year already.
L – LGBTQ+ Migrants & Healthcare
There are still many places in the world where being gay is downright dangerous. This means, for multiple reasons, LGBTQ+ migrants can present with unique needs that limit their access to healthcare. This can range from ‘cultural competency gaps’ to helping patients navigate the intricacies of the UK healthcare system, such as the immigration health surcharge. The LGBT Foundation’s latest project seeks to ensure healthcare providers and services are well-equipped to address LGBT inclusion in healthcare.
G – Getting Help Giving Up
From stereotypical club life, to mental health and prejudice there are a multitude of reasons why the LGBT community are greater affected by substance misuse. Drugs, alcohol, and even smoking are one of the target of the LGBT Foundation’s “No-One Blooms in Isolation” campaign. Not just providing vital community support, but training Greater Manchester’s substance services and healthcare professionals in LGBTQ+ diversity and sensitivity. All this aims to help LGBT+ adults to fight their addictions and stay clean.
B – No Ballots Left Behind
No one can escape the election news, and the LGBT Foundation have been making sure the Queer community #VoteWithPride. Not only have they been encouraging people to register to vote, but also helping people to receive a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC). If you don’t have a passport of driver’s licence, the the VAC is a photo ID alternative. For trans-people, still in the process of legally transitioning, it’s a vital access to their democratic rights.
T – Timeless Pride
Five years ago the LGBT Foundation joined forces with Gandalf himself, Sir Ian McKellen, and launched their ‘Pride in Ageing‘ programme. This initiative not only celebrates older members of the LGBTQ+ community, but also aims to tackle loneliness and healthcare needs. With support from the likes of Barclays, the Foundation have been able to run free schemes like a digital café and book club to get over-50s connected, as well as a ‘Box of Me’ workshop for LGBTQ+ communities on preparing for end-of-life care.
