On Thursday, Seoul’s Shonpa police said a Japanese woman was charged with sexual harassment in public places under the bill, involving punishment for sexual crimes. She was accused of forcibly kissing Jin (real name Kim Seok Jin), a member of South Korea’s popular K-Pop band BTS, during a “Free Hug” event in Seoul last June. The woman, in her 50s, reportedly returned to South Korea and volunteered to appear before the police.

The identity of the woman has not been disclosed. However, after the incident, she allegedly wrote on her blog that she kissed him “on his neck” and that his skin was “very soft.” The kiss clip spread quickly, and anger spread among BTS fans. In the video, Kim responds by taking off his face before turning to the next fan. A criminal lawsuit was subsequently filed against the woman, and Songpa police investigated in February this year.
The incident happened the day after the BTS star retired from the military. He performed in front of 3,000 people. Of those attending the meeting, 1,000 won the opportunity to come on stage to embrace him. A Yonhap report said another woman was alleged to kiss him during a three-hour “Hugathon”. Kim Seok-jin is more famous for Mononym jin and is the oldest member of BTS. He joined the army in December 2022 and became the first member of the organization, completing mandatory military service on June 11, 2024. Jung Ho-Seok was known as J-Hope four months later. The other five members of the group – Kim Nam-Joon (RM), Kim Tae-Hyung (V), Park Ji-Min (Jimin), Jeon Jung-Kook (Jungkook) and Min Yoon-Gi (Suga) – are aiming to complete their service in June this year.
