Do you think the Zoom generation is having more sex than baby boomers? Think again.
In honor of World Sexual Health Day, Indiana researchers released a study comparing how many times each generation has sex per month — and Gen Z didn’t score very well.
Among other unpleasant findings, they found that young people are woefully behind when it comes to frolicking in bed.
“Nearly half of Gen Z report being single,” wrote Dr. Justin Lehmiller, a social psychologist and researcher at Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute, who authored the report, according to the Daily Mail .
The study, “The State of Dating: How Generation Z is Redefining Sex and Relationships,” is based on data collected from more than 3,310 users of the dating app Feeld.
According to the study, participants came from 71 different countries, ranged in age from 18 to 75, and were “surveyed regarding sexual and relationship attitudes, behaviors, and experiences.”
“We sought to compare gender and relationship identities, behaviors, and preferences
some of the youngest and oldest Feeld members,” the researchers wrote.
The survey found that Generation X (born roughly between 1965 and 1980) and Millennials (born between 1981 and 1996) scored the highest in boudoir: Participants in both age groups reported lifting weights an average of five times in the past month.
Meanwhile, Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) and the Zoom Generation (born between 1997 and 2012) tied for last place, averaging three crazies per month.
“Generation Z and baby boomers have nearly identical frequencies of sex, suggesting that the youngest and oldest adults are having the least sex,” the researchers wrote.
Quantity isn’t everything though, as a recent study found that Zoomers have the most fun when they dance without pants.
Interestingly, 50% of Gen Z respondents said they were single, “compared to just one in five Millennials, Gen Xers and Baby Boomers.”
Despite not being as sexually active, Zoomers are the most adventurous, with half claiming they’ve discovered a new sexual fetish since joining Feeld. Meanwhile, 49% of Millennials, 39% of Gen Xers, and 33% of Baby Boomers say they’ve discovered a weird sexual fetish that turns them on.
The researchers offer two possible explanations for this phenomenon.
“On the one hand, older people have had more time to learn and discover what they like about sex, so they may have already discovered their own kinks,” they wrote. “However, on the other hand, younger people today seem to be more interested in kinks than older people, which may make them more willing to explore and learn about their own kinks.”
Equally paradoxically, research shows that Gen Z is nearly twice as likely as older generations to fantasize about monogamy.
This seems to contradict modern depictions of 20-somethings as polyamorous free spirits who stray from romantic and sexual norms.
So why are young people living alone most likely to idealize monogamy, while middle-aged and older people prefer non-monogamy?
The researchers speculate that “older adults may have more experience practicing monogamy, and some may find it is not for them.
“Or they may simply find that after a long period of monogamy, they crave sexual novelty and experience.”
Simply put, the sense of separation will become stronger.
In contrast, Gen Z romanticizes monogamy because they are more likely to remain single and not have sex.
This paradoxical, old-fashioned desire for true love may also be because many Zoomers have yet to enter a serious relationship with a single person, the study suggests.
