By accepting reality, we gain power and control.
It can be an enduring aspect of human nature to always wish for a better life for ourselves and our loved ones. We hope that more money will suddenly come knocking at the door. We wonder if an annoying coworker will call in sick today. We hope that traffic will miraculously clear. And so on. An addict who has been sober for a while will often smile when a newcomer shares these wonderful thoughts. Then, the old addict will gently shift the focus of the discussion to a deeper, more profound truth: Sobriety is about living on life’s terms. While it’s easy to wish for some advantage in a difficult situation, the best thing we can do is seek counsel from a trusted advisor and then do the best we can. Accepting our situation immediately gives us more power—power that is wasted by endlessly wishing we would miraculously have more resources.
