Addicts: Your Rehabilitation Journey

Addicts: Your Rehabilitation Journey

Dr. Robert Weiss, LCSW, CSAT

If you are reading this blog, you may agree with the idea of repeated attempts and may even have a promising future, but fail to permanently get out of your sexually compulsive behavior. Because that is the essence of addiction. As drug addicts, we are fascinated. Sexual coercion forces us into trouble even if we don’t like it. Without the help of others, we wouldn’t have anything to do to disrupt this pattern.

Unfortunately, starting a journey to healing from sexual and porn addiction can be confusing. We feel we should be able to say, “I will no longer be involved in these behaviors”, which should be enough. But that’s not. In fact, one of the main criteria used to define addiction (all types) is that users usually quit smoking or exit or withdraw from or withdraw from multiple times.

So ultimately, we seek help with a loved one, friend, employer or nearby judge without action. The moment we reach out, the moment we admit that we need help, because we can’t seem to stop alone, it’s the moment when we finally have the opportunity to quit and quit.

But where do we start?

There are several ways for drug users to start recovery. Often, we first try to educate ourselves, read books, listen to podcasts, and attend webinars. Then, if we accept the advice provided in these venues, we will have free online and in-person support, including 12-step groups and online support groups.

If we find that these efforts are not enough to stay awake, we may find outpatient therapists who specialize in addiction. (For sexual and porn addicts, this should always be a certified sex addiction therapist.) If we are still in outpatient therapy plus other work we are doing, we still recommend online or in-person workgroups and reinforcement words. Another suggestion may be a few weeks in residential rehabilitation and long-term care.

Basically, the process of addiction treatment/recovery is similar to the treatment process of physical illness. We start with the most inviolable intervention to see if it works. If that’s true, it’s great. If not, we will work hard to upgrade until we make a difference.

Of course, some addicts will jump straight to residential recovery. Often, this is because they are in an acute crisis associated with addiction, requiring safety and 24/7 treatment intensity. Often, their relationship is on the edge, or they face legal or professional consequences, or they have concurrent material problems that complicate the sobriety and recovery process.

It’s a pleasure to seek integrity either either provide or guide you all of these options.
