Scroll through Instagram or Tiktok and you’ll find endless videos of these mellow rodents hanging out in steamy onsen bathrooms with citrus fruits swinging next to them, or happily chosing on juicy watermelons. Now imagine meeting these gentle giants in person, their furry faces peeking out of the warm water. If you can’t get enough of these adorable creatures, this is the perfect way to spend a cozy winter.
The origins of Capybara Bath date back to a cold winter in 1982 at Shizuoka’s Izu Shaboten Zoo. One zookeeper noticed that moringas, which naturally thrive in warmer climates, would happily sink into warm puddles left behind by cleaning. This serendipitous discovery led to the creation of dedicated hot-water baths, now a beloved custom at more than 20 zoos in Japan. In 2015, several zoos established this tradition by establishing the “Capybara Open Air Baths Protocol”, ensuring that the heart-warming spectacles continue to be a winter highlight.
The popularity of these events is growing, with attractions such as Capybara Watermelon Eating Contest Famous in summer and Japan championship in winter. The much-anticipated annual event’s Long Bath Championship features each zoo’s representative Capybara to see who can soak the longest.
