7 Ways to Make the Most of Sexual Health Month 2021 | Sex

September, or as I like to call it “Sextember,” is Sexual Health Month. The World Association for Sexual Health has officially declared September 4th as World Sexual Health Day to raise awareness about sexual health, and it is celebrated throughout the entire month of September.

But what exactly is sexual health? According to the World Health Organization, sexual health is the state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality. Being sexually healthy varies from person to person, but it means much more than simply preventing sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. In general, having good sexual health means being able to be intimate with a partner, communicating explicitly about sexual needs and desires, and setting appropriate sexual boundaries. Sexual health also means respecting and appreciating the differences of others, as well as recognizing each other’s sexual rights.

To help raise awareness this September, here are some tips on how women can maintain good sexual health:

1. Find the right gynecologist:

A gynecologist is a doctor who takes care of all your sexual and reproductive health needs, whether you experience pain during sex, have a sexually transmitted disease (STD), pregnancy and fertility needs, or are going through menopause.

2. Positive body awareness:

Many people are ashamed of their bodies and many women have never seen what their own genitals look like. Take a small mirror and take a good look at yourself. Learn to love and accept every curve of your body.

3. Get tested for STDs:

It is important to know that some STIs can occur not only during vaginal or penetrative sex, but also during unprotected oral sex. A Pap test can save your life, your partner’s life, and if you become pregnant, your unborn child’s life as well.

4. Menopause is not the end:

Your reproductive system may slow down to a halt when you reach menopause, but your sexual health is still important. It’s important to take your sexual health seriously after menopause because you can and should continue to enjoy a healthy sex life long after menopause.

5. Consent and Authority:

In case it wasn’t already clear, your right to sexual and reproductive health is non-negotiable. Your consent and choices matter most. You can follow the advice of doctors, parents, spouses, or friends, but the final decision about your body is yours.

6. Talk, talk, talk.

If you feel anxious or nervous about anything, tell your partner. If you feel uncomfortable expressing your concerns, ask your partner to reassure you that they are open to conversation. By spending 15 minutes talking about this topic, you may find it easier to stay in your emotional comfort zone.

7. Read a book or listen to a podcast

Read a book about sexual health that addresses your questions and concerns. You can search for previous blog posts written by me that discuss books and podcasts related to sexual wellness. I recommend starting with those to learn more.
