Addiction allows us to imagine that we can somehow control the difficulties in our lives.

Sex and porn addicts share certain traits. One of those common traits is that we seek oblivion through compulsive porn viewing and sexual behaviors. We use sex and porn as a distraction and a means of passing time, as a way to escape reality. And we are not alone. Alcoholics drink not for social interaction and enjoyment, but to numb themselves. Drug addicts drink not to enjoy time with friends, but to clear their heads of negative thoughts. Similar statements can be made about compulsive gambling, compulsive spending, and eating disorders. All addictive behaviors are driven by the desire for emotional escape, not for pleasure. Sex and porn addiction are no different in this regard.
