There are more people in the United States than ever before
Every year, Gallup collects data as Gallup Poll Social Series. The series includes twelve different topics where researchers conduct interviews over the course of each month. Participants formed adults over the age of 18 from all 50 states, with their perceptions of many topics, including environment, consumption habits, and education.
One benefit of this data collection effort is that we can learn how the U.S. population composition changes and develops. Recently, LGBTQ+ identification for American adults was reported A new record reached. As of 2024, 9.3% of adults in the U.S. now see it as something other than lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or straight. In today’s blog, we’ll discuss the upward trend of LGBTQ+ logos, especially with members of Gen Z.
The increase in LGBTQ+ logo
In 2023, 9.3% of U.S. adults identified as LGBTQ+ have increased significantly in 2023 Estimated to be 7.6%. Below, picture (by Gallup) shows an increase in LGBTQ+ recognition as they began collecting this data in 2012.
There are some things to note about in this number. First, the percentage of U.S. adults identified as LGBTQ+ is almost twice as high as in 2020 (from 5.6% to 9.3%). Second, although the jump from 2022 to 2023 was only 0.4 percentage points, the increase in LGBTQ+ recognition rate from 2023 T0 2024 is almost two complete percentage points (up 1.7%).
LGBTQ+ recognition via queue
The rise in LGBTQ+ recognition seems to be mainly attributed to the Generation Z member, who was born from 1997 to 2006. In fact, as of 2024, one in five of them identified as LGBTQ+. By comparison, only 1.8% are estimated to be individuals from the silent generation (born in 1945 or before) and are estimated to be LGBTQ+. The second number, also Gallupdecompose the differences in these depths.

While the percentage of millennials and Gen X has also increased, the changes in recent years have been much smaller than the rise of Gen Z. In general, Gallup estimates that every generation can expect Double the number of individuals identified as LGBTQ+ More than the generation before them.
LGBTQ+ logo added driver
As mentioned above, Generation Z is the driving force behind the increase in LGBTQ+ identification among American adults. In this cohort, women identified as bisexual seem to be where we see the most movement. It is also worth noting that the LGBTQ+ recognition rate is higher among liberals and people living in cities.
Out and identified as LGBTQ+ has been described as an individual’s “authority and powerful behavior of community building” [1, p. 248]. For Gen Z members, online space has become an important place for such community building to occur. Specifically, the study found that social media promotes a secure space for identity development and is able to find other capabilities that are also members of the LGBTQ+ community [2]. This means social media has given the younger generation a wider range of sexual and gender identity than ever before.
There may be a number of factors that may lead to an increase in LGBTQ+ recognition. But a large part of the story may be due to the increased public support for LGBTQ+ people over the past two decades and the increase in same-sex marriage, which may make people feel more free to stand out.
It will be interesting to follow these trends in the coming years. Will the numbers continue to rise? Or will they rise or even fall as the new LGBTQ+ cultural war heat up? We will pay attention to it.
