Who’s your celebrity crush? I surveyed more than 4,000 American adults about their sexual fantasies for my book Tell Me What You Want and, among other things, I asked them who they were fantasizing about. In the images below, I focus on fantasies about the rich and famous and present the results separately for male and female celebs.
As you can see, among both women and men who fantasize about male partners, the results were pretty similar overall. The same goes for women and men who fantasize about female partners. However, a few differences did emerge.
It’s worth noting that most of my participants were White and most White people in my study fantasized about same-race partners. As a result, these lists aren’t diverse. If you do subgroup analyses based on race or ethnicity, some differences do appear. In the coming weeks, look for a post that explores how one’s own race is linked to sexual fantasy content (not just in terms of the celebrities we find attractive, but other features of our fantasies as well).
I should also mention that people are far more likely to fantasize about their current partners than they are to fantasize about the rich and famous. In fact, whereas about 90% of my participants said they had fantasized about a romantic partner before, two-thirds had fantasized about a celebrity. Moreover, while 51% said they fantasize about their romantic partners often, just 7% said they fantasize about celebrities often. What my data suggest is that if there’s one person who’s most likely to appear in your sex fantasies, it’s a current (or former) partner.
So why is that? Why do we fantasize about our partners more than celebs? For the answer to this question as well as an in-depth analysis of the deeper meaning behind our sex fantasies, check out Tell Me What You Want.
