The blue waffles were fake, but how did they go viral so quickly?

Blue Waffles

Blue Waffles — As for this disgusting legend, it started around 2010… or 2011… or (according to the website “Know Your Meme”, September 2008. You see, people can’t even pinpoint exactly when it started. And, if you don’t know the aforementioned website, just know that it’s not appropriate for workplace viewing most of the time.

Bait and Switch

It started with a simple photo of a waffle that had been photoshopped blue, with the caption “But you can’t find me on Google Images.” This type of bait-and-switch is common, posting a seemingly harmless photo that turns out to be disgusting or disturbing.

In the case of Blue Waffle, the replaced image was of swollen, diseased labia (caused by disease) that had been distorted to the point where it no longer looked like a vagina. Then, someone used some crazy Photoshop skills to adjust it to a blue/green color.

But it doesn’t end there

Once the victim is gagged, the following text is what really triggers the nightmare.

It goes on to describe the “symptoms” you’ll experience if you contract this horrible STI. These include…

  • redness or irritation of the vagina or vulva,
  • Unusual or foul-smelling discharge, as well as itching or burning
  • Itching, burning, and swelling around the vagina
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • pain during intercourse
  • blue or purple bumps on the vagina,
  • The labia and vulva may be painful when touched

Now you’ll understand why this prank unfolded in such a horrific way…

Mermaid Waffles

Unfortunately, it’s already unboxed

Puns aside, the meme/image spread like wildfire. People called medical hotlines demanding to know what doctors were doing about this new sexual epidemic.

And since it was targeted at women, it did a lot of harm to the female community, who would be seen as dirty or a whore because they had an itch down there (probably because they were menstruating at the time and things got weird). But no, they had blue waffles!!

fact: “Internet Munchausen syndrome” is when people deliberately create illnesses to provoke or gain attention. So some people are jumping on the bandwagon to get “thoughts and prayers.”

Thankfully, health organizations acted quickly, releasing bulletins and videos to try to calm people and explain that it was a hoax and that the image had been doctored, but it took years for the term “blue waffle” to stop causing hysteria among people with genital issues.
