Step 7 as a Mantra

The most necessary element of change is awareness of the need for change.

Step 7 reads: “Humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.” Usually this is done as part of a prayer—either the seventh step prayer or a more general prayer. However, the ‘God’ language of this step can be a sticking point for many recovering sex and porn addicts. One useful suggestion if we run into this roadblock is that instead of praying to a Higher Power, we can simply state aloud—as a mantra—our desire to have our character defects removed. Usually, the mere realization that our character defects exist, coupled with the contrary action of saying aloud that we would like to be rid of them, results in significant progress.
