A British spiced rum gift set combining sex toys and the Kama Sutra has been scrapped after complaints it “does not conform to traditional public policy and good customs”. The UK alcohol industry’s Independent Complaints Panel (ICP) concluded that Pirate’s Grog Love Potion No.9 Spiced Rum kit was found to be in breach of contract because it was labelled as an “intimate love potion kit” and had “the connotation of ‘charming’ your lover with the sparkling powder of desire”.

Therefore, under sections 3.2(d) and 3.2(j) of the UK Liquor Industry Regulations, both of these products are considered to be directly related to erotic activities and have an ancillary effect that may alter mood or behaviour. In accordance with the provisions of both Regulations, both of these products are covered.
The complaint was filed by a company called Identity Drinks Brand. The complaint reads: “Shouldn’t a winery sell sex toys and be allowed to be listed? The panel believes that under the industry code, the Kama Sutra should be included in alcohol gift packages (a famous book describing positions for sexual intimacy) and the sex toys were “inappropriate.”
During the review stage of the informal resolution, the product name Pirate’s Grog Love Potion No. 9 Spiced Rum and the text on the back label of the rum gift box were questioned and therefore contravened the regulations. Gift packaging must be reviewed by the expert panel. Pirate’s Grog accepted the panel’s findings and confirmed that it had stopped production.
In evidence before the panel, the beverage manufacturer said wild cherries were “considered a libido fruit” and that describing the ingredients in the beverages violated the code. The panel acknowledged that listing ingredients is acceptable, but does not demonstrate that additional pleasure can increase sexual desire.
Additionally, the name “love potion” suggests it can “change a person’s mood and behavior by creating feelings of love and romance,” the panel said. The company has now agreed to change the name and packaging of Love Potion No. 9 rum.
Rachel Childs, chair of the independent complaints panel, said: “The panel agreed that the Kama Sutra and sex toys were clearly associated with sexual intimacy. The Portman Group then contacted the manufacturer and it has now been agreed that the name and sex toys.” packaging of Rum No. 9 will be changed to reflect the panel’s decision.
“It is absolutely essential that producers take the Code into account and ensure that alcohol products do not imply that they will help consumers achieve sexual intimacy. I encourage any producers who are unsure to contact us for a free confidential consultation. Serve.”
