Pompeii reoccupied for 4 centuries after destruction –

New excavations from Pompeii have found archaeological evidence that the city was reoccupied after it was destroyed in 79 outbreaks in Vesuvius. The city’s former residents have no resources to move out, and may have made homes for their own houses from other places in the ruins of the upper remains of buildings that still sit on top of the ashes. The lower layer under the ash layer is used as a wine cellar and converts it into a fireplace, oven and mill.

Initially, they lived in a desert of ashes, but vegetation quickly flourished again.

In addition to a place of residence, Pompeii also offers the possibility of digging underground where valuable objects can be found, although occasionally stumbled upon the body of a decomposed victim.

It was somewhat improvised, if not anarchic situation, perhaps because Emperor Titus sent two former consuls as curators in Campania reduction: In addition to promoting the reconstruction of Pompeii and Hekranim, they are also responsible for taking care of the assets of those who have no heirs and handed them over to the “city of suffering.” However, attempts to rebuild were failed because the site never again became an important center before the outbreak. On the contrary, from archaeological data, this must be a settlement where people live under unstable conditions without the infrastructure and services of Roman cities. This did not prevent this form of settlement from continuing until the late antiquity, that is, until the 5th century AD, when it might coincide with another devastating eruption (called “Pollena pruption”), which was absolutely abandoned.

Researchers estimate that Pompeii’s population was about 20,000 at the time of the outbreak. The death toll is unknown, with only about 1,300 found in the excavation. During the escape, more people must have died outside the city, but since the excavation began in 1748, they have focused primarily on the city itself. We know from the inscription that some survivors have built their own establishments in other towns, but people without means may have no choice but to go home and build improvised houses on the upper floors of the building.

The Insula Meridian is a neighborhood south of the city center of Pompeii. Only partially excavated in the past, and a thorough stabilization, merger and recovery activity is underway. At the same time, archaeologists have been conducting stratigraphic research in various places and excavated in various layers to record timelines.
