February 2020 – Imagine that one day you plan to go out and take some photos, whatever your hobby or passion is. It’s a sunny day, nice weather…

Then you find some birds playing with dildos.

Yes.

That’s what happened when conservation photographer Jennifer Warner visited a children’s pool in La Jolla, California. Her plan was to go to the beach to take photos of seal pups (despite complaints from residents who want the beach open year-round and conservationists who want it off-limits for nearly half the year, the beach is closed for several months so the animals can safely give birth).

However,

Seals aren’t the only animals that love the coast – due to the absence of humans, many bird species also find it a great place to congregate.

Everything was going well, but Warner noticed a group of noisy seagulls fighting over what looked like a piece of plastic. As an environmentalist, and working for the following organizations: Cheetah Conservation Fund and Camera Shootingof course she was very angry.

But when she zoomed in, she discovered this was no ordinary piece of plastic…

“I was irritated before I realized what it was. Because plastic pollution is a really serious problem, and as a conservation photographer I’m documenting the impact humans have on wildlife. But when I realized what it was, even though the other emotions were still there, you couldn’t help but find the humor in it,” Warner told Gizmodo.

As annoying (yet funny) as they were, the photos she took ended up going viral and went some way towards raising awareness for the cause.
