The idea behind 69er Day
In addition to the traditions and quirky holidays already on the calendar, Wild Secrets is pushing for September 6 to be celebrated as Reciprocity Day, or “69er Day” in Australian colloquial terms. The proposed day would celebrate equality, reciprocity and intimacy in relationships, focusing on the importance of balance, mutuality and open communication.
69er Day is rooted in the idea of mutual satisfaction, not just physically, but in every aspect of a relationship—emotional, mental, and social. The name, of course, is a playful nod to a popular intimate position that symbolizes mutual give and take. The day is meant to highlight the importance of mutual pleasure and satisfaction, encouraging couples and individuals to prioritize their partner’s happiness and well-being over their own.
Proponents of 69er Day believe that such celebrations can promote healthy, fulfilling relationships because they foster open conversations about intimacy, consent, and the importance of ensuring both parties’ needs are met. The holiday can be a fun, lighthearted opportunity to discuss serious topics related to relationship dynamics in a more approachable and engaging way.

Once we have 500 signatures we will start hosting events for our clients on this day each year and push MPs to take this nationwide.
How will 69er Day be celebrated more broadly?
If 69er Day were officially recognized, there would be countless creative and meaningful ways to celebrate it:
- Seminars and lectures: Community and educational institutions can offer workshops on topics such as intimacy, communication, and relationship health to help individuals and couples learn new ways to increase mutual satisfaction in their relationships.
- Date Night Specials: Restaurants, spas, and entertainment venues can offer special deals to couples, encouraging them to spend quality time together and participate in activities that promote intimacy and enjoyment.
- Social Media Activities: The campaign could launch an online challenge or content sharing campaign encouraging people to share how they prioritize shared happiness in their relationships, using a dedicated hashtag to foster a sense of community and engagement.
- Promotional Activities: Businesses can collaborate on promotions or events that fit the theme of “69er Day,” such as special offers on couples’ experiences, intimate products, or wellness services focused on strengthening relationships.
- Public awareness campaign: The media can feature stories, expert advice, and testimonials that emphasize the importance of mutual pleasure and intimacy, helping to normalize conversations about these topics in a respectful and educational way.
Sound a bit far-fetched? Don’t forget Pirate Talk Day
One of the most well-known and beloved quirky holidays is Talk Like a Pirate Day, celebrated every September 19th. It all started in 1995 when two friends, John Ball and Mark Summers, were playing racquetball in Albany, Oregon. Halfway through their game, for reasons they couldn’t explain, they began cheering each other on in Pirate slang. “Ahh!” and “Hey, man!” flew across the court, and before they knew it, they were fully immersed in the Pirate language. The experience was so much fun that they decided the world needed a day dedicated to talking like a pirate.
Why September 19th? Summers chose the date because it was his ex-wife’s birthday, so it would be easy to remember. The idea for Pirate Talk Day might have started as a private joke between two friends if it weren’t for humor columnist Dave Barry. In 2002, Barry wrote a column about the holiday, and the rest, as they say, is history. The column brought the holiday into the public spotlight, sparking a wave of pirate-themed parties, events and social media posts every September 19th. What started as a spontaneous, lighthearted joke has become an international phenomenon celebrated around the world.
Keep Moving: Bringing 69er Days to Life
We remain optimistic that the Australian Government will consider this proposal and recognise the importance of establishing a holiday dedicated to mutual enjoyment and relationship equality. Not only would this holiday add a fun, playful celebration to the calendar, it would also serve as a reminder of the value of balanced and mutually satisfying relationships.
Even if 69 Day doesn’t immediately receive official recognition, the event itself can serve as a starting point for conversation, encouraging people to think about the dynamics of relationships and the importance of mutual fulfillment. 69 Day advocates encourage everyone to embody the spirit of the holiday in their daily lives, fostering a culture that prioritizes equality, mutual respect, and shared joy in all forms of relationships.
Whether or not 69er Day becomes a national holiday, the efforts behind it convey a meaningful message: happiness, joy, and connection are only enhanced when they are equally shared, and every relationship benefits from mutual care and understanding.
