Ah, New York. What has Frank Sinatra, Joan Didion, even Carrie Bradshaw not said?
I’m not a New Yorker myself (yet!) but my spouse is, and I’m waiting for my green card so I can move there, something I’ve low-key wanted to do since I first visited the city at age 9. It’s a city known for its tourism industry (which generated a $74 billion economic impact last year!), and I’ve been there 20 times myself in the last decade, sometimes staying for weeks or months while visiting my spouse – so while I’m far from an expert, there are a lot of things about the city that I love. People often ask me for recommendations when visiting Toronto or New York, and I’ve written extensively about Toronto, so let’s talk about my travels. other My favorite cities and what I would recommend to sex fans like you and me!
Blue socks
Described as “New York’s only queer, trans, and sex-worker-owned bookstore,” it’s a great bookstore not only for what they carry, but for what they do for the community. (For example, in 2023, they were unfairly threatened with eviction for distributing life-saving naloxone kits and fentanyl test strips to those who needed them.)
Whether you want to learn about grassroots activism, queer art, trans joy, the history of escorts in New York City, or just want to lose yourself in some quirky poetry, this is the place to go.
Ms. Confidential
Located on the 12th floor of an office building on West 57th Street, the store, formerly known as Eve’s Garden, was the first feminist sex shop in the United States. It was founded in 1974 by a woman named Dell Williams after a bad experience at Macy’s, where a male salesperson shamed her for buying a vibrator. (You can learn more about this in Episode 3 of my miniseries Making Magic!)
It’s always fun to go around different sex shops and see what they sell, but this one was especially interesting because it’s actually a piece of sex toy history. They also sell my favorite lube brand, Sutil, even though Sutil is a Canadian company, which makes me like them even more.
Leather Man
Be sure to visit this vintage fetish clothing store with sex toys galore in the basement! This is definitely a must visit store.
Leather Man is located on Christopher Street and is surrounded by a lot of gay history, including the Stonewall Inn, so it’s a great stopover on a gay-themed city tour. Magnolia Bakery is just a few blocks away if you want to grab some cupcakes as an aftercare.
Sex Museum
This Fifth Avenue institution is exactly what its name says: the Museum of Sexual Culture and History. Some of the exhibits (I believe) are permanent, including one on vintage vibrators – but most are short-term exhibits that come and go. I always recommend checking online to see what they’re currently offering before buying a ticket, as they’ve been hit or miss for me in the past – but overall I tend to have a great time when I come here, and always come away with some new knowledge to ponder or a new fantasy to consider.
Their gift shop is located in the lobby and is also a very well curated sex shop with lots of toys, lubricants and novelties for sale. I still find it a little puzzling that since they are a museum they stopped selling (most?) books a while ago, but hey, what can you do.
Yes House
It’s a performance venue in Bushwick, but that’s a bit like saying the Eiffel Tower is a building in France… you have to experience it to understand it!
My favorite thing is their circus themed shows; people do all sorts of hilarious burlesque acts, aerial acrobatics, pole dancing, etc. The crowds get really rowdy and there are tons of cool gay people everywhere. They also have all sorts of parties here, including sexy parties
