Japanese designer Yasu Michino founded his own independent leather goods brand Michino in 2014 after accumulating more than 20 years of experience in Parisian brands. This series combines French elegance and Japanese simplicity to create exquisite handbags specifically for international customers. With timeless silhouettes and classic tones, Michino bags are made in Florence, Italy, where the finest traditional craftsmanship transforms leather from renowned French tanneries into exquisite accessories.

Michino has extensive experience as a luxury handbag designer, including stints at Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Delvaux and Balenciaga. As an experienced leather manufacturing expert, Yasu wanted to offer customers a more affordable alternative to well-known designer handbags, without compromising on high-quality materials and refined design. He strives to create understated, functional and chic bags suitable for everyday use. We reached out to Michino, who told us about his thoughts on Tokyo and where he gets his inspiration.

Defining Tokyo Fashion

How would you describe Tokyo fashion in one word?

Eclectic. Tokyo’s definition of “fashion” is as much about its huge population. What’s fascinating about the city’s aesthetic hybridity is its juxtaposition with cultural tendencies toward conformity. I believe the people of Tokyo understand the importance of balancing both: they can contribute to a sense of collective harmony when needed, while also expressing individual originality. Everyone has a unique inner world, which is why you can’t judge a Tokyoite by his cover – this contrast adds to Tokyo’s vibrant fashion scene, with styles that are both elegant and wild, understated and minimalist. I love it!

The inspiration behind Michino Paris

Tell us a bit about your design process. What inspires you as a creative?

First is my travel. I try to travel as much as possible to immerse myself in various cultures and interact with locals. I believe there is much to learn from perspectives different from ours, and that our own ways of thinking can unexpectedly expand and shift as we wander. My design process is also inspired by exchanging ideas with my clients, who are generally very knowledgeable and well-informed. Their personal touches and their helpful comments or suggestions are reflected in my work. Finally, I have always been fascinated by history – I love being inspired by art history and biography. I find that continuous learning is crucial for creatives.
