Lori and I often watch Living Traditions Homestead on YouTube. In addition to providing information we can use, they are a lovely Christian couple who love each other and have a plan. In a recent video, they talked about the difference between knowledge and experience. If you watch hundreds of videos about gardening or raising animals, you will have a lot of knowledge. But when you try to put that knowledge into practice, you will find that knowing is not enough. To be good at gardening or raising chickens, practical experience is essential. You can only gain experience by doing. And you gain experience by making mistakes.
The same is true with marriage. You can read all the books, follow all the blogs, and gain tons of knowledge. But you have to apply that knowledge to gain practical experience. And you’re going to make mistakes.
A great way to gain experience is to do something new with someone who knows how to do it. This is true for gardening or marriage. That’s why I recommend being with couples who seem to be in a happy marriage. It’s also why counseling can help.
I’m all for the pursuit of knowledge, but it’s not enough. Even if you’ve been married for years and are happily married, sometimes new ideas pop up. A book and some trial and error might be all you need, but it takes work, and some things won’t work.
