Who is Soshi Otsuki?
Soshi Otsuki was originally from Chiba Prefecture and studied men’s clothing at the Bunka Fashion Academy in Tokyo. After launching his Soshiotsuki brand in 2015, his work quickly began to attract domestic and international attention. Just two seasons later, Otsuki was selected as the finalist of the LVMH Awards in 2016. Some of his notable achievements since then include winning the Tokyo New Designer Fashion Grand Prix (Professional Category) in 2019, and the Tokyo Fashion Award in 2024; the latter provides him with the opportunity to showcase his work in a showroom in Paris.
Soshi Otsuki’s impeccable tailored suit borrows the power of the “sewer rat” worn by Japanese wages in the 1980s, an era marked by a booming “bubble economy” and a surge in consumerism. Italian clothes are made of expensive wool, usually made in brown-gray shades, and are popular among Tokyo’s bustling streets and subways. Otsuki cleverly pays homage to these Armani-inspired silhouettes and uses elements reminiscent of traditional Japanese clothing, such as the kimono sleeve-inspired insert pocket.
“It all started with me seeing men in dark suits line up on a crowded train, looking like a funeral parade.” interview With Japanese GQ. “I often use daily activities to create works that evoke Japanese atmosphere and spirituality.” Otsuki says he was inspired by classic Japanese performing arts such as Kabuki and Rakugo.
