Japanese clown lands last in election due to xenophobia

It's just Yusuke

In the general election held on Sunday, current Liberal Democratic Party member Tanaka Ryōo led the Saitama Prefecture 15th District representative with 73,973 votes (35.6%), retaining the Saitama Prefecture 15th District representative seat. Rintaro Takagi scored 60,356 points (29.0%). However, the last-place candidate grabbed most of the headlines. Yusuke only – Known as the Japanese Joker, although he also sometimes dresses as the titular character of the Japanese Joker mask — received only 16,157 votes (7.8%), more than 1,500 votes behind Communist Party representative Chizuko Moritani.

Yusuke Kawai’s xenophobic movement

Kawai’s campaign focused on “protecting” the area from the minority of immigrants who live there. He said he wanted to rid the streets of foreigners, ironically dressing up as an American comic book character. He addressed Fern Station’s online supporters, calling on them to help him patrol the area. Anti-racist liberals showed up and asked him to stop his hate speech. They also tried to prevent him from delivering his message. Kawai claimed he had been harassed but received little sympathy.

Tokyo governor election

This is Kawai’s second major election this year. The first time was the Tokyo governor election, and Yuriko Koike won. Japan’s “Joker” received only 2,035 votes, ranking outside the top 20. He posted controversial near-nude poster on first day of campaign promote Model Miu Sakurai “promotes the importance of free speech.” He took down the photos after receiving a warning from police that they may be violating Tokyo’s anti-nuisance ordinance. He later filed an objection with the Tokyo Metropolitan Election Management Commission in an attempt to cancel the election because he believed the campaign committee did not have enough space to place candidate posters.
