I am 33 years old and have been traveling alone for 15 years –
Catch up on the flight, not feel.
While many women in their 30s want to settle down by buying a house, getting married and having children, Daisy Dyke is pioneering a different path.
Dyke, 33, has been traveling alone for 15 years full-time – she has no plans to stop as soon as possible.
Dyke, a content creator from Dorset, UK, told Luxury Travel, “I never settled down and had the urge to live ‘normal’.”
The travel error began with a year in Australia when she was 18 years old and she has been moving ever since.
Dyke took a risk under a work holiday visa in 2010 and planned to “removal the trip from her system”, but the opposite was true.
Since then, she has visited 69 countries, traveled almost continuously for 15 years, and recorded her journey online.
“I’m 33 years old, single, and didn’t even have any jobs in the first few years of my trip,” she said. “I never thought my life would be like this – but it turned out to be better than I thought.”
“I would be shocked at 18-I thought I was 30 and grew up at that time and I didn’t believe I was still single and traveling at this age.”
After working as an inland ranch for cowgirls, Dyke rescued him heading to Australia’s east coast and then went to Thailand, Kuala Lumpur and Borneo jungles where she lived with the tribe.
She returned to the UK to study in Liverpool for three years, saving money during that time to make her travels in Europe for her spring and summer vacations.
When she graduated, she knew she would never live a traditional life, at least not at all in the near future.
“The more I travel, the more opportunities and jobs I have, so one thing leads to another and my travel list gets longer.”
In 2014, Dyke moved to Greece as a waitress and then returned home briefly to work properly to save backpacks throughout South America.
She then flew to New Zealand, where she spent two years working as a horse hiking guide. During this time, she also volunteered to stay in Tonga and Hawaii and took vacations in the Philippines and the Cook Islands.
She has since had a leading travel group in Europe, which helped her get discounts on her next trip, including six countries in Africa.
When Covid-19 hit, Dyke’s situation changed and she lost her job. Before starting her trip again, she was forced to move back home temporarily and work full-time as a marketing manager.
In May 2021, she booked a one-way ticket to Mexico where she taught English and worked remotely, which eventually led her to become a content creator.
She quickly gained a community of 196,000 followers on Instagram @daisystraveldiaries and now runs a digital community called Globe Strutters.
Of course, she doubted her own suspicion during her trip. In 2019, she even refused a job in Japan for fear of settling there and eventually flying back to the UK.
“I absolutely doubt myself, comparing my life to friends who are married at home, working in business and having kids,” she admitted.
“For some strange reason, I convinced myself that I should try to settle in London and felt it was weird that I didn’t want that life.”
The brave explorer soon realized that she hated settling in London and set out again.
“There are a lot to see and I want to do a lot globally – I never felt the urge to ‘settle’,” Dyke declared.
However, she does admit there are some things she doesn’t like often on the road.
“For me, the only big guy is missing out on things at home,” she said. “My family is so close that I miss events and parties – even though I always come home for a friend’s wedding.”
She continued: “The relationships are also tough – you might meet an amazing person and stay in good shape, but then have to say goodbye. But I also think that when the right person comes up, it will work.”
A lot of trolls are because of her single lifestyle rather than settle down, but Dyke hugged her and jokingly called herself a “painful slut.”
“Trolls were my biggest inspiration,” Dyke said.
“There are a lot of voices, especially to women, saying that we should live somehow — but that’s ridiculous,” she said. “There is no ‘right way’ to live a life that makes you happy.”
“Choose a life that makes you happy and when you walk there and start traveling, you realize how many people are living that life there.”
She added that even though she chose a different path to life, she was still very happy for her loved ones who went to a more traditional route.
“I’m also very happy for having beautiful babies, fur babies, company bad guys and friends who buy homes. We’re all on different journeys and each journey should be celebrated the same way.”
