How to Clean Sex Toys – Terminology
These terms can be confusing at times, but you hear them everywhere. Therefore, it is important to understand the difference between them. We will also look at them from the following perspectives: only The sex toy perspective (as opposed to the extreme way hospitals take care of the items, such as sterilizing them after every use.)
clean = Removes surface material – but still leaves harmful substances behind
disinfect = Remove/Reduce most Harmful microorganisms or organisms in the form of
disinfect = reduce Bacterial count ( clean or disinfect) reaches 99.9%, but viruses and fungi still exist
disinfect = Remove all Organisms (all life forms), including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and spores
Think of it this way: You have a metal tray full of juices from three-day-old uncooked chicken.
- You wipe it with soap and water. Clean, but not sterile.
- Or you can skip the water and just pour a whole bottle of bleach on it. Disinfected, but not cleaned.
- But you’ll want to wash it in warm water, pour in a 10% bleach solution, rinse, and then dry thoroughly. It is sterilized and clean. (Tip: The hospital needs to sterilize the tools)
you can Clean your sex toys, but if you’ve ever shared your toys with someone who has an STI (or if you did), that might not be enough.
When should you Clean Your toys? before and after Every use.
When should you disinfect Your toys? After anal use. If you’ve ever had a yeast infection. If you share toys with a partner. If they’re for vaginal use and you don’t have any infections, it’s still a good idea to sterilize them sometimes.
Porous vs. non-porous – the great battle
If the toy is non-porous (NP), it means that bacteria, viruses and other harmful substances will only stay on the surface and can be easily removed. But if the toy is porous (P), it means that the substances will be absorbed and remain inside the material. No matter how you clean it, they can’t be disinfected.
Materials such as body-safe or medical-grade silicone are non-porous and are a good choice. TPE is body-safe but porous and is often used due to its softness – and is much better than materials such as jelly (which is terrible).
Checking Your Sex Toys – Start at the Store
Maintenance starts at the store – even before you whip out your credit card and scurry out with your own paper bag.
- What material is it made of?
- Is it porous or non-porous?
- Are there any gaps or crevices that are difficult to access and clean?
- Does the toy have a weird, chemical smell?
- Are there any cracks, rips, dents, or any blemishes that might be cause for concern?
- salesperson Actually Do they know what they are talking about and are willing to educate you honestly? Or are they just there to waste your time and then go home?
One more thing to remember Conventional Inspection is important for toys you already own. You wouldn’t inspect your car for the first time and then never again, right? The same is true for our little ones.
Listen to the engine and check for tears, strange discoloration, black spots (mold or mildew), etc. My poor vibrator started making noises like killer bees playing rugby with a bunch of marbles. Yeah, I wouldn’t want to have it between my legs if it started to spark.
Using condoms as a barrier
It’s no secret that I’m a huge advocate for using safe materials…and burning the rest. While condoms are tested to protect against certain substances, many sex toys aren’t actually tested for the chemicals in them.
However…
I know that sometimes budget or personal insistence prevails. If that’s the case, wearing a condom is definitely better than wearing nothing at all. Wear a condom if…
- The toy has holes
- You have an infection (P or NP doesn’t matter)
- You switch from anal to vaginal in one play session (P or NP doesn’t matter)
- Sharing toys with someone you don’t know well (P or NP doesn’t matter)
How to Clean Sex Toys – Different Methods
If your toys have batteries or mechanical parts and are not waterproof, do not submerge them in water, and be careful not to get anything into the battery compartment etc. This could cause corrosion.
Soap and water – This is the most common method for cleaning most toys. This method works best for toys that are not porous. The water should be warm, not hot, and the soap should be mild and unscented.
wipe – Meaning don’t put them directly into the water, just use a clean damp cloth.
boiling – Usually 3/5/10 minutes (no one seems to agree on a time). I choose somewhere in the middle. To be safe, put a tea towel under the pan (thanks, Dangerous Lilyhere’s a tip! ) Reserve it for things like solid metal toys. Be careful, cheaper toys may have a metal coating that will peel off.
dishwasher – If you decide to go this route, make sure your machine has a Disinfect the setup. Otherwise, there’s no point and you might as well just wash it with soap and water. Do not add soap or other dishes to this cycle (I don’t care what they show in the movie).
bleach – Follow the 10% rule (10 parts water to 1 part bleach). Soak for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly, especially for metal toys like the Njoy. Use cold water only.
Rubbing alcohol – Another option for those who love to be extremely clean. Simply wipe with a clean cloth and rinse.
corn flour – This method only works with Cyberskin toys or Fleshlights. Wash, dry thoroughly, then dust with organic cornmeal or the store brand that came with the toy. Do not use talcum powder. They are not the same.
Toy Cleaner – You might think this is the best method, but to be honest, before you choose this method, other methods are much better. Sex toy cleaner is more for emergencies, when you have to swap toys with a partner (without condoms) and need to clean quickly. If my toys have been hidden for a while, I tend to use it before rinsing them with soap and water (but I am a bit of a mysophobe). Learn more about sex toy cleaners in this article.
