Hidden gems on Yamanot line

It is often recommended that first-time visitors to Japan “stay on the yam line”, and there is good reason. The circular train line circulates in central Tokyo and covers many of the city’s major shopping districts, cultural attractions and more. Some key sites include Monojuku, Shibuya, Uno, Ikebukuro and of course Tokyo. However, the famous Green Circle also includes several neglected communities that have unique charm and their own history. If you need to change the pace of Tokyo’s most touristy area, or you’re looking for a quiet community to stay here, read on! Below, we introduce some hidden gems from the Yamanot series.

Nippori: Textiles and Nostalgia Path

Nippori is known as Tokyo’s textile district, retaining a nostalgic shitamachi (old city district) atmosphere. Nippori Fabric Town is a 1km long street that is a treasure trove of designers, amateurs and craft enthusiasts, with a large collection of fabrics, buttons and sewing accessories. The community can glimpse the quieter side of Tokyo.

Located on the other side of Nippori Station, Yanaka Ginza is a shopping street with traditional snack stalls, charming cafes and cat-themed art. Try the delicious taste you like Menchi Katsu (Fried chopped steak) and check out Tennoji Temple, famous for its beautiful bronze Buddha statue.

Komagome: Peace Garden

Komagome’s tranquil community is home to one of the most beautiful, well-crafted gardens in Tokyo. Designated as an important cultural asset in 1953, the garden embodies the tranquility of the Edo period beautification environment and is known for its breathtaking crying cherry trees.

Not far away is the same impressive Kyu-furukawa Garden, which shows a fascinating cultural fusion. Western-style brick mansion and a charming rose garden sit on the top of the hill, while traditional Japanese gardens are located below.

Make sure to stay quiet and respectful when visiting the community as it is primarily a residential area.

sugamo: “Grandma’s absurdity”

Next to Komagome is Sugamo, a unique shopping area affectionately known as “Grandma’s Harajuku”. The shops and restaurants on the Jizo-dori shopping street cater to older crowds Shio-Daifuku (Salted Rice Cake) to the famous red lingerie in the area, believed to bring good health and luck to the wearer.

The spiritual heart of the community is Kogan-Ji Temple, where visitors can attend rituals to pray for health. During the ceremony, participants poured water on the body part of the Arai Kannon (“Cleaning God”) statue. It is said that the disease or pain in the same area will be relieved.

Megiro Garden

Mejiro: Fashionable, historic community

Surrounded by Mejiro Station, Mejiro is an exquisite residential area known for its sophisticated atmosphere and historic connection to the Japanese aristocrats. The academic heritage of the region is the most different. It is home to the prestigious Gakushuin University, which aims to educate the children of imperial families and nobles.

Head to Mejiro Garden, a traditional Japanese roaming garden with ponds and teahouses for a peaceful stroll. In autumn leaf season, it is particularly gorgeous, wrapped in red and gold. Mejiro’s streets have high-end houses, charming cafes and boutiques.

Gotanda: Hidden Restaurants and Izakaya

Situated between Osaka and the giant station, Gotanda is surrounded by high-rise office buildings, managing to preserve its lively and diverse food world. The area is known for its extensive Izakaya (Japanese bar) and other dining options, from casual restaurants to high-end institutions.

Some of these famous Izakaya include Shokudo Todakaproviding a cozy atmosphere and creative, visually appealing tapas dishes; Taishu Sakaba Beetle Gotandais the classic Izakaya, accompanied by Yakitori and grilled dishes; and NehnanThis is a rustic space known for its grilled beef kebabs.
