Freedom of marriage: God and others’ thoughts

I believe God will understand. I’m not sure about my neighbors. ~Dad to Yentl

It’s been forty years since I watched the movie, but I still remember the line clearly. Yentl’s father teaches Talmud to boys in his small Polish town. At that time, Judaism prohibited the teaching of Talmud to women. But behind the locked door and closed curtains, Dad taught it to Yentl. The quote above is how Dad’s answer was answered when Yentl asked why he was careful and no one saw him teach her.

The Bible talks about weaker brothers and warns us to avoid behaviors that even if the action is not sin, offend their weaker faith. But the weak siblings don’t see what we do in the privacy of our house and marriage, and we are free to do whatever God can accept.

This applies to what we eat and drink, how we raise children, and how we do our sexual behavior. But, while God will understand, some of your Christian neighbors may not. Be careful not to provide people with weaker faith.

So no matter how your faith in these things remains between yourself and God. Blessed are those who do not condemn themselves by themselves. ~Romans 14:22 NIV
