Former AVN writer Mark Kerns dies

Revered writer, editor and enthusiastic speech advocate Mark Kernes died on April 16, 2025 at the age of 76. A long-time senior editor at Adult Video News (AVN) has left behind a legacy of journalistic integrity, wit, and dedication to the adult entertainment industry.

Born in 1948, Mark’s career spanned decades, during which he became the cornerstone of AVN, shaping the industry’s narrative with profound comments, in-depth articles and sharp comments. While serving on the board of the Free Speech Alliance, his work went beyond journalism and advocated for the rights of creators and performers. Mark, known for his encyclopedia knowledge, dry humor and commitment to truth, won respect and admiration from colleagues and readers.

Mark’s influence goes far beyond AVN’s page. He is a mentor to many, a fierce defender of artistic expression, and a friend whose presence ignites any room. His passion for storytelling and fearless approach to solving complex problems will be deeply missed.

His loved ones, countless friends and a community that was forever moved by his contributions survived. A private memorial will be held in his honor. The family demanded donations to the Free Speech Alliance in lieu of flowers to continue Mark’s legacy of promoting free speech.
