Types of masks and hoods
Decorative
Think of a carnival mask, or one of those beautiful masks you get at a masquerade ball. They can be elegant or scary — whatever you like. They’re also one of the cheapest options if you’re on a budget.
GIMP Hood
When you think of BDSM play, you usually think of these types – it looks like you’re going to rob a bank.
role play
Masks are often used when pets are playing (horses, dogs, kittens). Even doctors’ masks count.
Bondage
They are restrictive in some way – either they are tight or they attach to other parts of the body.
“Feature”
These gadgets are pretty creative. They can be used for bodily fluid play (like a urinal that attaches to your mouth) or they can be used as gas masks to control your breathing. Oh, and eye masks can also fall into this category.
notes: Breath control is considered a fringe game and should not be performed by the inexperienced.
Material
Whatever you say, I bet there is a mask made of that material. Really, as long as it’s comfortable (if you want comfort), anything goes. The material will also greatly affect the price range. So remember, you get what you pay for.
A note about latex – I used to think I was allergic to latex (and I still am, because I wear cheap medical gloves and condoms), but I recently discovered that there are some brands of latex that I’m not allergic to. Yes, they’re a little pricey, but if you have a latex fetish, it’s good to know that you still have the opportunity to wear latex.
You can always ask the company to send you a small strip of material that you can tie around your wrist or ankle at night and see the results in the morning.
Wear
Some masks can be difficult to put on (like some latex masks). Some masks may compress your nose or other parts of your head in ways you didn’t expect. Be sure to read the seller’s detailed information and measurements — that includes stretchability (how much it stretches).
Also, if your saliva, sweat, or something else gets inside your mask, make sure you know how to clean and store it properly so you can use it for as long as possible.
Other Tips
- Check the sewing quality
- Check out the seam comfort
- Check the quality of zippers, buttons, cords or clasps
- Check user ratings or brand/company quality
- Wait for a sale (like Black Friday)
