FamilyMart just launched an all-vegetarian menu

FamilyMart vegetarian menu

Japan is a country notorious for its difficulties for people with dietary requirements. It’s often not even a language barrier issue, but more of a cultural issue. Many Japanese dishes, even seemingly meatless dishes like cold soba noodles, are actually made from animal products, e.g. stock (the broth is usually made from fish), making FamilyMart’s new vegan menu a major breakthrough for plant-based eaters in Japan.

How Family Mart defines “animal products”

According to the Family Mart website, their vegan range is called “Blue Green” and is made with great emphasis on deliciousness. It’s nice to know convenience store chains won’t compromise on taste just because a product is vegan. They are also very clear about what “animal products” means. This includes not only meat, seafood, eggs and dairy products, but also products that may contain ingredients of animal origin and products and products produced on the same production line as products containing animal ingredients. This means the menu is fully covered even for the strictest vegetarians.

An entirely plant-based menu

The menu currently only has four courses, but covers all bases from snacks to main courses and even desserts. First up is the Vegan Mont Blanc, made with crumble, chestnut cream, whipped cream and Italian chestnut sauce. If you want something light but sweet, you can also buy Plant-Based Financier, which comes in a soy latte flavor and is made with soy milk and cocoa nibs. The main dish on this menu is keema curry, which sounds very healthy as it contains lots of colorful vegetables, spices and even soybean meat which contains protein. Finally, your go-to vegan snack is the plant-based bibimbap rice balls, made with sautéed vegetables, soybean meat, and spicy chili sauce.

You can try FamilyMart’s “Blue and Green” menu at FamilyMart convenience stores nationwide.
