Summer is finally coming to an end. The trip to Japan miraculously made it out of the group chat, and TikTok’s “For You” page was flooded with countless suggestions for where to shop for fall pieces in Tokyo. Fashion lovers and influencers from around the world have been highlighting everything from the 12th-floor Uniqlo flagship store in Ginza to the tiny vintage store in Koenji, but not every shopper is aware of the Betty Smith Ebisu Factory where you can get custom made Own product Japanese jeans.
The birthplace of Japanese denim
Betty Smith was Japan’s first domestic manufacturer of women’s jeans and remains a major player in the industry. The company was established in 1962 in the Kojima area of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. The area has been a center of textile production for hundreds of years and is known as the “birthplace of Japanese denim.”
Fashion lovers and visitors to the area should definitely visit Jeans Street, which houses the flagship stores of many Japanese denim brands. A short bus ride down the street is the Betty Smith Jeans Museum and Village, where visitors can learn about the history of Japanese denim, shop at the Betty Smith Outlets and customize their own jeans.
Betty Smith Ebisu Factory
Luckily, Betty Smith also has a store and workshop in Ebisu, Tokyo, where you can buy the company’s standard denim merchandise and enjoy the same patented “denim-making experience.” Yebisu Hotel Gongfang (Factory) is only a 5-minute walk from Ebisu Station and can be booked through the website website. When you walk up to the fifth floor, you are greeted by the store’s mascot, Betty-chan. The shelves are stocked with a variety of styles of men’s (unisex) and women’s indigo jeans, with long denim skirts as an additional option. After trying on different styles, employees can sew the jeans to your desired length.
Now comes the fun part: choosing the buttons and rivets you want on your jeans from a colorful collection of modern and vintage-style embellishments. You can also personally select leather tags for the back of jeans from a selection of sheepskin, cowhide and deadstock woven tags.
The staff will sew the tags onto the jeans, and then use a machine to tack on the buttons and rivets for you. The store recommends wearing sneakers so you can pedal properly with your feet. Once your jeans are complete, you can take them home as an original souvenir that you can keep forever.
