Addiction is an isolating disease.
Novelist Dean Koontz once wrote: “There is a thin line between a tired hermit and a fearful hermit. The line between a hermit and a bitter misanthrope is even more finer.” Addiction is a desire to cross those lines disease. Addiction requires us to be alone and isolated, so it can both nurture and devour our shame. When we don’t have people in our lives to provide emotional comfort and point out that our lives aren’t as bad as they seem (or are probably worse than they seem), our addictions can run wild.
