Wild Ginger in Rhubarb, by Eule Grey is a short but sweet love story between two women who instantly fall in love the second they meet.
Ginger is the flavor of love in Rose’s heart, and she works hard to save money to open a gin distillery, where she brews specialty gins and customizes bottles according to customer needs. She dreams of meeting a handsome man who smells of ginger and can make her heart flutter. However, she meets ginger Charlie, and she does what she always does when she is scared – she runs away.
Rhubarb is Charlie’s love scent, and she’s taking a break from a tough undercover assignment. She longs for the affection of a gentle woman, but the rules are clear. No romance when you first return to this world. Her resolve is tested by her super-sexy neighbor at the gin shop who smells like rhubarb.
Luckily, ginger and rhubarb gin is a concoction made for love.
writing
The book is short, so the author didn’t waste time on plot. Charlie and Rose’s almost stream-of-consciousness narration is sometimes enhanced by exaggerated emotional language and feelings. They both know what their dream lover will be like, but of course there are obstacles along the way.
Pros and my favorite part
Besides the extreme highs and extreme lows of emotions and feelings, there are a lot of silly things, like Charlie’s vague answer to Rose when they first really meet. There is no doubt that the two will be together, which is what they both want very badly. I like that the barriers to their romantic goals are actually very low, because it feels like there are few distractions from the main events of their romance. There is some deadly seriousness in the story, and the shy sweetness masks the dark depths of Rose and Charlie.
careful
There is a threat of gangster violence.
in conclusion
Two women with synesthesia, who associate a person with a natural perfume, can hardly resist the overwhelming attraction. Ginger is Rose’s love scent, and that’s what she gets from Charlie after she gets over her initial fear of the tomboy next door. Charlie smells rhubarb on the beautiful woman who owns the gin shop next door, a perfume she can’t resist. Both women are attracted to each other, but Charlie has to follow some rules, and Rose has a secret that could ruin everything.
There’s no doubt that Ross and Charlie are made for each other, but first they have to overcome some not-too-serious obstacles. The story is simple and sweet, and I loved it. There’s some silliness, mystery, and danger, but nothing that’s overwhelming.
From Wild Ginger in the Rhubarb by Eule Grey
“Rose – if you only knew what my life was like as her brother. Charlie was a freak. She once stole my piggy bank.” He limped along with an exaggerated, pained expression on his face, just like when they were kids. Ollie had always been good at playing the victim.
Charlie can’t resist. As he passes by, she pretends to kick his butt, thinking that she has ruined her day with Ross.
She couldn’t be more wrong.
Rose put her hands on her hips and glared at Ollie. “This is serious, young man. Don’t you know how serious a crime it is to waste water? I’m reporting you to the environmental police. No hoses allowed here.” She raised the hose and then turned it off slowly and carefully.
When Ollie wasn’t looking, Rose winked at Charlie.
Charlie was happy as hell. Training manuals and rules be damned. She would take Rose for a bike ride, have a blast, and maybe even ask her out on a date afterwards.
