MC Hutson “The Birth of Blood and Magic” A secret vampire hunter takes on the most hated vampire in the world.
Just as she begins to explore her sexuality, Petra’s world is destroyed when a vampire brutally murders her mother. She spent years training with a secret organization that both fought supernatural beings and ruthlessly exploited them for profit. The only light in Petra’s world is the hope that she can finally kill the creature she hates with all her heart.
Vee may be a vampire, but human blood isn’t for her. She still feels terribly guilty about the insane bloodlust of her youth that claimed the mother of a shocked girl. After ten years of abuse at the hands of the supernatural world, she’s surprised when the girl from that terrible night comes to destroy her.
She made a deal with the soldiers. If they could find an ancient time travel mechanism, maybe they could rewrite history and right the wrongs. After many adventures and eye-opening revelations, the two begin to fall in love in a completely unexpected way.
writing
The author created a profound mysterious world composed of undead, shape-shifting creatures, and magical creatures, and let the corresponding shadow organizations fight against it. Unusually, the organization is largely a for-profit organization that transcends religious elements. The world-building is deep and complex, and offers many opportunities for horrific choices and heart-rending actions by dangerous people and supernatural beings.
There are many characters, and most of the supporting characters are clearly drawn and have an important impact on the overall story. Since this is the first book in the series, there is no clear HEA.
Pros and my favorite part
Despite knowing this was part of a series, I will say the ending of the book had a huge impact on me. The reader spends a lot of time with Vee and Petra, and both of their characters go through a lot of growth and fundamental changes. To say more than that would be a huge spoiler, mind you, it was still lingering in my mind the day after reading the book.
The story has a lot of surprising twists and turns, is filled with great emotion, well-done action sequences, and a hard-earned romance between two characters who are not supposed to fall in love. I’m glad that the world-building is deep and doesn’t offer easy solutions to any of the protagonist’s problems, and that there are many possibilities for events to go one way or another, and even another way after that develop.
In a humorless book, I was amused by a bed scene that changed existing tropes long enough to warrant a laugh.

in conclusion
As young adults, Vee and Petra met one night after the new vampire killed Petra’s mother, leading her to undergo years of training with the Shadow Organization to strengthen her body and mind so she could take revenge. When they finally meet again, they discover they need to work together, leading them on a journey filled with violence and worry to possibly make things right.
The first book in the series took me on a journey through a carefully constructed world of supernatural creatures and the shadowy organizations that hunt them for entertainment and profit. This is not a HEA, this book gave me an unprecedented hangover. There was no reason for Vee and Petra to fall in love at all, both characters went through a lot over the course of the story to make the romance believable, and the pacing was great and made me impatient for the rest of it.
Excerpted from MC Hutson “The Birth of Blood and Magic”
Vee could see that Petra was shaky, but she wasn’t sure what else she could do to win over the humans.
Willingly – that word makes everything more difficult than it needs to be. If not, Vee can confuse Petra and force her to help.
Vee sighed sadly. She needs that hourglass. Living in a state of permanent malnutrition is unsustainable. She longs for approval from her mother’s faction. She dreams of a connection that only belonging can bring.
For Wei, loneliness is the worst thing about existence. Although invisible, it is obvious and pervasive. There is a heaviness to its companionship that can feel suffocating at times. Maybe it’s suffocating – a slow death from a million hostile looks and more snubs.
If Vee were freed from her pain, she would no longer be despised and ignored. She no longer has to worry about getting too close to humans. She could have her family back. She might even find love.
Wei pins all her hopes on Petra’s choice, which makes her unhappy. She is the only one in the world.
Through Dustin, Vee learns the depth of Petra’s hatred for her. This woman sees Vee as her worst enemy and nothing more. She calls Wei a lightless being—a soulless being.
As for Petra, Vee needs to tread lightly. She couldn’t give Petra a reason to fall out.
