Bayeux tapestries return to the UK after 900 years –
Bayeux Tapestry will return to the UK for the first time in nearly a millennium, thanks to the historic loan agreement between the UK and France. The iconic tapestries depicting Norman’s invasion of England and Hastings will be loaned to the British Museum in the fall of 2026. In exchange, the British Museum will borrow some of its collection’s greatest treasures, including works by Sutton Hoo Ship Burial and Lewis Chessmen’s Norton ship.
After William, who conquered England by William of the Duke of Normandy, 224 feet long and 2’4 inches high 11 years, knitted around 1077, believed to have been produced in or around Canterbury. It was commissioned by William’s brother, Bishop Odo, Bishop of Bayeux, so it moved to Normandy once it was finished.
Multicolored wool embroidery is a unique description of 12th-century France and England, captured in 58 scenes with 626 people, 202 horses and 93 penis. (Duke William’s horse has the largest horse.) Scene 57 shows King Harold Goldwin’s eye death, whose death is marked as “Hic Harold Rex Interfectus Est” by the stitch above the scene, meaning “Harold King Harold here is killed.”
This is the second attempt to arrange a return to school for the tapestry. In 2018, France and the UK announced that they would lend the 2022 exhibition, but when a three-year study of Bayeux Tapestry was conducted, the program was scrapped, finding it too fragile to move ahead of a comprehensive recovery plan and repair plan and addressing tens of thousands of weaknesses, including 30 non-stable tears.
Protection is now complete, and the Bayeux tapestries are stable enough to cross the passage again. When the Bayeaux Museum is closed for renovation, it will serve for one year at the British Museum.
