Crystal sex toys (sometimes called “stone” sex toys) are nothing new.
They pop up from time to time because some celebrity endorses them or the crystal energy health craze picks up again.
But are they really safe to use?
The answers are an infuriating “yes” and “no.”
What are crystal sex toys made of?
They can be made from four main types of stone…
- quartz – For emotional cleansing, including citrine and onyx
- Jade – Includes jadeite and nephrite, symbolizing optimism, good luck and zest for life
- amethyst – A variation of quartz, used for calmness and balance
- obsidian – Overcoming trauma or removing obstacles
However, whether or not people believe in these healing properties is up to them. The real question is, can they be kept out of the sun?
A Closer Look at Crystal Sex Toys
Many people think sex toys fall into the same category as sex or body aids and therefore are classified as medical tools, which brings to mind images of clean, sterile medical instruments or freshly cleaned dental equipment.
The problem is that while some sexual aids can be classified as medical grade products, 90% (or more) of what exists today is a far cry from that concept. Some are so far from “medical grade” they might as well be in another galaxy.
You see, the industry is completely unregulated. While some companies insist on using processes and materials that are not harmful to the body, many companies use words like “adult” or “novelty” to avoid possible lawsuits.
This means that when you see a really good dildo, it doesn’t guarantee that it’s safe to use.
Here we can see stone/crystal products…
‘HOLE’
The main problem with this material is that it can be very Porous.
Why is this important?
Because porosity means the material has microscopic holes or tiny crevices where bodily fluids (or other substances) can hide and escape whatever cleaning you do to it. Any viruses and residue, mold, and bacteria can form.
Well.
Essentially—> Imagine rubbing your nether regions with a dirty pumice stone.
Next up Permeabilitywhich simply means whether water can pass through.
Generally, any porous material is also highly permeable, and vice versa. But this is not always the case. For example, volcanic rocks are an exception.
- Quartz = Non-porous
- Jade = porous
- Obsidian = Very different
However, this does not mean that all “quartz” dildos are safe. Keep in mind that there may be unscrupulous scammers passing off porous stone as something safe.
how do you know?
The key is to ask the supplier!
Any trustworthy company, like Chakrubs, will tell you the porosity measurements and where their stone comes from. Places like Albibab or Ali Express should obviously be avoided. Etsy is a gamble at best, but it might be worth a look.
Additionally, it never hurts to do some personal research — but no matter what sex toy you buy, it’s important to be informed.
