This winter, Tokyo is getting a bold new night view: Takanawa Gateway City (Stylized as “TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY”) — a recently built urban redevelopment area — is hosting its first-ever projection mapping event. In the program, We enjoyed the light journeya blend of large-scale visuals, immersive sound and synchronized fountains, transforming the buildings and open spaces of Takanawa Gateway City into a cohesive three-dimensional experience. The event is from February 5th to February 11th.

Not just seasonal Projection mapping activity, Takanawa Light Tour captures the past, present and future of Takanawa Gateway City with a guiding concept: one An experimental site to enrich life in the next 100 years.

Takanawa Gateway City will be fully opened on March 28, 2026, and its concept is a living laboratory. The entire region is an ongoing experiment, driving innovation and testing solutions to global social challenges. Directly connected to Takanawa Gate Station and easily accessible from central Tokyo and Haneda Airport, the area is quickly becoming a must-see destination for nighttime travel, and this event marks an important milestone in its development.

What to expect from Takanawa Light Tour

At the heart of Takanawa Light Journey are two original projection mapping projects, each providing a unique perspective on Takanawa’s past, present and future. work”Time journey – the light path of memory“Takanawa takes viewers on a glorious journey through history, tracing Takanawa’s role as a gateway, transportation hub and center of innovation during the Edo period, and then projects a vision for the city, The situation now and the situation 100 years from now. Synchronized projection mapping and fountains create a dynamic, multi-layered experience that unfolds throughout the space.

The second episode of the program “High Wheel”, capture Takanawa City through sound. Original music composed of local ambient noises (station chimes, announcements, footsteps and crowd movement) forms the soundscape of the production, grounding the futuristic visuals in the everyday realities of Takanawa Gateway.

Between shows, visitors can enter the Luminous Gateway, a three-dimensional light corridor formed in smoke, Light and reflections around the fountain. Designed to be walked on, the installation invites interaction, with plenty of photo opportunities and an otherworldly feeling of being inside the projection itself.

A highlight of the event was the first comprehensive introduction of moving mirror technology in Japan. This innovation enables performances to utilize the entire venue, including ceiling, floor and surrounding space, creating a truly immersive environment.

As a new nighttime attraction, Takanawa Light Tour puts Takanawa Gateway City at the forefront of Tokyo’s exciting urban entertainment, but its true significance lies in its vision: a prototype of how future cities can tell stories, activate public spaces and invite people to participate in shared immersive experiences.

Vision of Takanawa Gateway City

Takanawa’s story has always been closely linked to transformation and innovation. During the Edo period, Takanawa Gate was a large wooden gate that served as the official south gate of Edo, controlling the flow of people into the city. About 150 years ago, the region made history again Innovation Center: Famous Home to Japan’s first maritime railway, this engineering feat symbolized Japan’s breakthrough into modernity.
