A Japanese beer company wants to brew beer in space

Cooperate with High seat electricalis a Nagoya-based company specializing in advanced aerospace fluid technology, and the project aims to conduct Japan’s first beer fermentation experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). The initiative, called the Space Brewing Project, will utilize the Japanese experimental module “Kibo” (aptly translated as “hope”) and mark a new chapter in brewing and space science.

The core goal of the project is to explore how microgravity affects yeast fermentation. As the company behind the joint venture explained in a statement Press releaseAdvances in food production technology will be critical when humans begin long-term stays in space. They believe that understanding how yeast behaves in such extreme environments is “critical to supporting quality of life.”
For the space brewing process, Isekado will select an award-winning proprietary yeast strain. Once in orbit, the yeast will be fermented in a special brewing vessel aboard the International Space Station developed by Toyo Can Group Holdings, which is designed to withstand pressure and temperature fluctuations. Kirin Beer also provided technical cooperation, demonstrating the Japanese spirit of collaboration and innovation.
Once back on Earth, Issacado’s team will analyze how space conditions change the yeast’s fermentation behavior. The resulting “space-cultured yeast” will be used to brew limited batches of beer.
Going forward, this experiment could pave the way for future space food production and inspire new experiences, such as enjoying space craft beer in orbit.
