Japan expects a brief autumn and sudden winter this year

Japanese autumn

After the hottest summer on record, the Japan Meteorological Bureau (JMA) warned that autumn will be short-lived, causing the sudden start of winter.

In the long-term forecast, JMA predicts the widespread high temperatures in October. However, cold air will dominate starting around December, with lower than normal temperatures in eastern and western Japan.

Warm in the late stage, sudden chill

The three-month outlook highlights these dramatic changes. According to early forecasts, warm air will be settled nationwide in October, resulting in a nationwide “normal” temperature “above normal”. November will continue to see “near or above normal” warmth throughout the region, but a sudden chill is expected to arrive earlier than usual in late November and early December.

JMA believes this is closely related to conditions similar to the LaNiña phenomenon, which involves cool sea surface temperatures along Peru.

This may mean

Usually, popular tourist areas such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are somewhat cold from mid-December to late December. In November and December last year, the monthly maximum temperatures in Tokyo were 17.8 and 13.2 degrees Celsius, respectively, and in Kyoto, 18.7 and 11.8 degrees Celsius.

This year’s irregular winter weather patterns may mean visitors face lower forecasts for viewing fall. This may also mean that the peak period of autumn may be shorter than normal.

Yoshinori Oikawa, director of the JMA Anomaly Weather Information Center, stressed the need for caution, as temperatures may still reach 30 degrees Celsius or higher in early October. he additional People should prepare for seasonal whipping because “the temperature may not feel warm until mid-November and then suddenly get cold.”
