• Ask your healthcare provider to test you for herpes, which is not routinely tested but can be spread through oral sex.
• Use barrier methods such as non-lubricated condoms (for the penis) and dental dams (for the vulva and anus).
• Avoid receiving oral sex if your partner has cold sores or cuts on their mouth, and vice versa if they have sores on their genitals.
• If you have oral health problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, oral cancer, or bleeding gums, you may have a greater chance of contracting an STI in your mouth.
