Rethinking Civilization: Can We Do Better?

This is not a specifically marriage post. But this is a marital problem for many people.

I have become aware of the ongoing breakdown in basic civility. The last election cycle did cause a lot of damage, but we had come very far before that. Some believe social media is to blame. I see a lot of support for this.

I should take a moment to admit my misdeeds in this area. I’m quite an introvert here, but I’m known to be quite active on Quora. I have a bad habit of making negative assumptions about people’s intelligence, integrity, or decency and telling them that. Of course, this is the opposite of what the Bible tells me to do. It’s also not an effective way to get people to listen to you.

I want to tell you that I just did it online with people who deserved it. Of course, I decide who deserves it based on my biases. Even if I do avoid doing this in real life, it’s still wrong to do it online. Intellectually, I know that we don’t compartmentalize our behavior as well as we think.

I allow myself to be influenced by those who do. I am both in this world and of this world. I’m trying to change because I want to be better and I want to be a light and encourage others to do the same.

As for marriage, I know that the way I treat others sometimes offends my wife. That alone is reason enough to stop.
