EDIT: I have now been issued a full refund! I also plan on washing the toy in hot water and soap to see if I can still use it. But from now on I will be avoiding this store for personal safety and some bad attitudes. If you’re wondering which store sold me this toy, I don’t mind sharing in DMs, but I don’t want to publicly bash them. I figured I’d go ahead and write this post in case anyone else has similar/same issues in the future, or if there are new developments/I still need advice. Thanks for the insights everyone! Hi! So. I bought a dildo from a small creator on etsy before the new rule changes went into effect on July 29th (banning the sale of sex toys on their platform). I’m not sure what to do with this toy at the moment…as I’ve had a pretty severe reaction to it when using it. That’s happened twice now. I’m an afab/female and have only used this toy vaginally. I’m also fairly sensitive and I admit I have a lot of health issues, but because of that I tend to be more mindful of what’s going on and why it’s happening. However, this is largely confusing to me. I can’t really tell what the issue is at the moment, and I don’t know enough about sex toy manufacturing to have a good grasp on it all. So I’m hoping some descriptions can help readers identify the problem, and/or answer some of my questions. Sorry this post is so long, but I guess this is really a saga. I’ve been wanting a new small creative toy lately, so I shopped around because a lot of small stores were having sales because of the new rules that were going into effect, and I had to shop around. In particular I bought it from this etsy store, which I had never seen before. But I made sure to ask if they only used platinum silicone (which they do), and felt confident in the purchase because of the many 5 star reviews (some with pictures). The reviews were also from about a year ago. I requested a custom cast similar to an existing one elsewhere because I liked the pattern but not the size/shape. I saw in the reviews that they make custom casts based on the pictures/descriptions, so I figured it should be ok. Honestly, their pre-made toys look really nice too, so I was excited! On the first try at the cast…it was poor. I discussed how I didn’t like it, and asked them to re-cast it if possible. They apologized and re-made it…kind of. They made two more toys that didn’t fit my theme, but I chose the one I liked best, and they sent it off quickly. At any other store I would have thought my toy would have failed because there were random pigments in several places that shouldn’t have been there. But I did get it on sale so I didn’t complain to them. It came in the mail and it smelled… a lot like chemicals. The texture on the outside was very odd. I didn’t really figure out what the problem was at the time so I just washed it with cold water and soap. I also didn’t realize how well platinum silicone behaved with heat so I didn’t think to use hot water. I just remember that heat can make water almost cloudy which is what this particular toy is primarily used for. I bought another platinum silicone toy (a set of 3 little eggs) at another etsy store and I think I’ve used it 3 times now. When they arrived in the mail, none of them had any smell and felt almost “squeaky clean”. I used the dildo toy about 8 hours after it arrived in the mail and then washed and dried it. I didn’t notice it at first, not right away, but there was a warm burning feeling that was getting stronger and stronger on any part of my genitals that the toy touched. Including the inside. It made the skin warm to the touch similar to how inflammation feels to me so I knew something was wrong. But it also had a slight burning sensation, not too intense, which reminded me of a mild allergic reaction I had recently to some food. It felt like I had eaten something spicy at the time and had a slight burning sensation in my mouth that didn’t subside for a while. I tried wiping there with a cold rag a few times, washed the toy again, dried the toy on a paper towel like before, and went to bed. The next day I woke up with very noticeable cramping and mild skin irritation. It felt like I almost had a mild chemical burn, and the skin near the entrance of my genitals was very sensitive to any touch, almost a little bruised. The skin was also a little warm and inflamed, but most of it had calmed down. I did the same thing as the night before, gently wiping it with a cold rag a few times. The cramping felt almost similar to period cramping, but slightly different. I definitely felt like my body was clearing something, but using different muscles or slightly different parts, I don’t know how to describe it. But I was in pain all day. The same night as it happened, I contacted the store where I purchased this toy directly through the messaging system on etsy. I vaguely described what happened and tried to ask a few questions to see what the problem might be. I had a theory that it might be that they used a lubricant in the mold to make the toy easier to remove, so they said to boil the toy for a short time to see if that would help. They apparently boiled it before shipping it to me and also said they had never heard of anything like this happening and apologized. They also specifically stated that the “lubricant” used for the mold was a mold release agent called Smooth On’s Ease Release 200. A few days later, I did not boil the toy because living at home, there was no way around it. I had no idea what this toy would boil out of and did not want to ruin my poor parents’ pots because of it. I cleaned the toy in the bathroom sink with soap and hot water, about five times in a row. And it was a very thorough clean, I got all the suds all over, got all those little curves etc. I used it a second time that evening, without the lubricant the first time, to see if it was my lubricant that caused some kind of reaction, but nothing happened. I thought everything was fine, so I picked up the lubricant and continued to use the toy. Still nothing happened. I went to bed, woke up, messaged the owner again with an update, and went about my day. About two hours later, when my body finally woke up, I checked my etsy messages and saw that those cramping symptoms had in fact happened again. I didn’t think it was as severe, but it still hurt and felt like something was being expelled. I updated the issue asking if I could get a full or partial refund. The owner offered a 50% refund, but not through etsy because etsy apparently blocked their store. They would give me the money through paypal (my payment method) if I emailed them. I haven’t accepted yet because honestly, it feels a little fishy after everything. Also, I took the time to message the owner about those silicone eggs I bought. I asked what mold release they use and if they boil their products before shipping. They responded that they use the exact same mold release and that they actually wash their toys with hot water and soap. So what I want to know is: * Has anyone had a reaction like this to a platinum silicone toy before? Did the toymaker use Smooth On’s Ease Release 200 as a mold release agent (if you know)? * Do you think the mold release agent was not thoroughly washed off before shipping it to me? Perhaps too much was used? Would a thorough washing eliminate the reaction? * Do you know if there was any part in the manufacturing process that would make the toy toxic? Would it be more worthwhile to throw it away? * Should I accept a 50% refund? Should I ask for a full refund? Should I raise this issue directly with etsy or paypal instead of accepting a partial refund through a private paypal transaction? * Should I be concerned about the manufacturing process and the unsatisfactory pouring? Does this hint at what may have happened and the creator’s lack of experience? Or is this just an irrelevant factor?
