While the ever-celebrated February 14 is all about big red hearts and romance with a capital R, February 13th happens to be a celebration of fierce and fabulous female friendships.Valentine’s day! Whether you’re in a relationship or single, this day is for you. Note: Valentine’s Day isn’t just for girls. The idea is to celebrate all the “girls” you love, regardless of their orientation or gender.
Illustrated by Leslie Knope of Amy Poehler in the popular TV series Parks and recreationThis fictional holiday has gained a huge amount of traction in real life since the first episode “Galentine’s Day” aired in 2010. In other words, even though it started out as the centerpiece of a fun episode, Valentine’s Day is now a larger-than-life event!
The only question, of course, is how best to celebrate the day. Here are 10 inspired Valentine’s Day ideas that are perfect for showing your love to whoever you promised on February 13th.
1. Cook together and follow up with a movie marathon
Whether it’s classic spaghetti and meatballs, an all-vegan gourmet dinner, or a mishmash potluck, breaking bread with the important women in your life is essential. And what better way to digest than by watching your favorite anti-romance (or pro-romance, depending on the mood) movies—or Watch this new series you’ve all been dying to see on repeat.
2. Host a girls’ game night
Get into a competition with your favorite characters. Board game options like Settlers of Catan, Cards Against Humanity, MonopolyJenga and Twister, to original games like charades, Truth or Dare or Would you Rather, the game possibilities are truly infinite. Wordle A challenge, anyone?
3. Stock up on alcohol with creative cocktails
Light some red and pink (or goth black) candles and gather your group for a night of festive cocktails! You’ll want to stock up on rosé, champagne, and other cocktails for a night of splashy chatter and hearty laughter.
4. Host a spa day or sleepover in your living room
Invite your gorgeous Galentines to a spa day—at your home (or a spa, if you prefer)! Either way, massages, foot soaks, facial masks, and nail polish will do the trick. And if it turns into an old-fashioned sleepover, even better. Break out your old yearbooks, magazine quizzes, and snacks, and remind yourself what it really means to fully unwind with your BFFs—everything.
5. Brunch at Knope
Leslie Knope introduced Valentine’s Day with her annual brunch: mimosas, decadent crepes and a gift exchange (or if you dare, a sex toy (exchange of gifts). Or, have a fancy dinner at a restaurant – couples don’t get to choose that idea, you know. Get a few friends together, dress up to the nines, and show off your glowing friendship at your favorite restaurant.
6. Throw a proper party
The angle here is entirely up to you and your gal pals. Whether you’re the anti-Valentine’s Day type or there’s a palpable pro-dating vibe (or both), you’ve got this covered. You can start with a theme, like “glamour,” “goddess,” or “paint and sip” (where the idea is to drink and paint pictures). You can play matchmaker with your guest list, or not. With great music, snacks, drinks, and company, you’re sure to have a night worthy of your favorite lovers and enemies alike.
7. Car trip!
Getting out of the house is one of the best ways to bond and create memories, no doubt about it. You can go to a new city for fun, or to the countryside for a weekend of skiing or hiking. You can also see what upcoming conferences/conventions might interest you and your friends (e.g. Comic-Con, political rallies, motivational talks, art retreats, etc.) and plan a trip around that.
8. Organize a clothing swap
Plan a get-together where everyone brings shoes, accessories, and clothes they want to get rid of and throws them into a giant pile in the middle of the room. Add some red wine and dark chocolate to the mix and voila, a new look for everyone in attendance. You can try taking turns to distribute the loot more evenly.
9. Plan a women’s family reunion
Plan a meeting with women from different backgrounds generations of your familyIf distance is an issue, there’s always Zoom. Quality time with your predecessors and children can provide incredible opportunities to learn about each other’s life experiences and truly appreciate all the new knowledge you gain from it—and, chances are, a new perspective.
10. Dance!
When in doubt, dancing is a surefire option, you heard it here first. Whether it’s a rock concert, an exclusive club, or a dank, dingy bar with a jukebox, go out with your friends with the sole purpose of dancing your troubles away, in style and together. Follow that up with a trip to a karaoke bar, if you’re feeling up to it. Whatever you do, make sure to paint your town cinnamon red.
It turns out that in February, 13 is the luckiest number of all, as it’s a day meant for girlfriend greatness and deepening friendships new and old, while avoiding February 14, if that’s where your heart lies. Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours, may it fill you with genuine joy and a sense of connection. <3
